Skydiving Nightmares.

Recommended Posts

I've been having these dreams lately, after I throw out my pilot chute, my lines seem to extend for hundreds of feet while I'm still freefalling. I finally get a full square, full inflation and sit vertical at about 5 feet above ground. I land hard but I'm okay. I also keep having dreams when my canopy opens and I'm about to do control checks, I fall out of my harness and freefall down without a chute. I'm so f*ckin' petrified I wake up from the dream before I'm about to hit the ground in that nightmare.

I hate these f*ckin' dreams. They really make me f*ckin' paranoid and I become real anal about checking and re-checking my equipment. From 10,000 ft to 13,500 and right before I exit, I do a quadruple check of my chest straps, leg straps and handles. I think I'm becoming f*ckin' neurotic because of these dreams. Does anyone else have any nightmares similar to this?

I hear ya, I've had dreams like that before. It can definately wig you out. What helped me out with those dreams was to laugh at them and go jump first chance I got.

Oh, I've got one I have to tell you about. I had a dream, that was reoccuring, where I burned in, bounced and all. I got up dusted myself off, was a bit miffed, remanifested and tried again. I burned in again! Got up, remanifested, was pissed off and determined not to burn in. I burned in again, so I gathered my gear, got in my truck and drove home...since it was obviously not my day to skydive. All of that was a single dream that I had a handful of times. Thinking about it while awake, it just makes me laugh, I remember being very pissed off when I was dreaming it, though.

Happens all the time. I still jump as often as I can. Makes the dreams go away.

These dreams did start dwindling as I became more active in jumping. I hope they stay away eventually....

I frequently have terrible nightmares after a day of jumping. I dream that no matter how hard I try, I can't pull any of my handles and the ground is rushing up at me. Just as I'm about 5 feet from the ground I usually wake up - too shaken to go back to sleep. One time it was so bad, I couldn't exit and ended up riding the plane down.

Sometimes I dream that I'm under canopy but I'm not wearing my rig (WTF?). I don't realize I'm missing my rig until about 1,000 feet - which is odd that I know this since I'm not wearing an altimeter either. Somehow I'm able to land perfectly and accurately by flapping my arms and kicking my legs.
Still haven't figured this one out.

Guess the dreams mean you're normal. Since I've been jumping a little more, the nightmares are getting less frequent. The same will probably happen for you.

i've had several. but the one that stands out was my brother and i were in freefall and when he pulled he had a baglock. he looked at with with a really scared look and didn't cut away or anything. i was scared to death for him but i remember thinking 'i can't help you-- i have to pull my own.' so i did and i had a baglock too, but didn't cutaway. we both rode our baglocks all the way down and had nice soft stand-up landings.

edited to add this 2nd dream:
my brother and i were in a plane and as it was flying it got wedged between 2 buildings. the door was open and the plane tilted to the side-- open door side down. he fell out the door and as he did, we both realized he didn't have a chute on. he looked up and made eye contact with me as he was falling-- and my god was he TERRIFIED. then out of nowhere i had a bedsheet in my hand and i held on to one end of it and threw the other end to him. next thing i know, the plane is un-wedged and flying with him dangling from this sheet. the plane landed safely and he was fine.

It's only a nightmare if it's in real life.

If you're asleep its truly a DREAM because you will find that you can survive the impact quite nicely. Try sleeping though it next time instead of waking up before you go in. Like aggiedave said you just kinda dust yourself off and go on about your way. A dream for sure.

Hey there, I really like the bit about flapping your arms and kicking your legs LOL!! Yeah, I have skydiving dreams too, mostly about aeroplanes crashing!! (probably 'cos I started off on static lines) the latest one I had, I had a total mal on my main, and went through my malfunction drills in slow motion and it all worked out well. Goes to show that my subconcious mind deals with it all well..

I had one that shook me up pretty bad -

There was a catapult thing (like a cannon) and we were doing BASE jumps out of it - Which is weird cuz i don't BASE anyway (#####) was doing one and his rig never opened - i could feel the ground impact from where i was and watched him bounce - fuqn scary - I didn't sleep for literally 3 nights after that.
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

You've got those long story type of dreams. Unless, we all do and you have more of a memory retention rate than most of us. That sounds cool man. I can only remember a few seconds of my dreams.

When you wake up and you have a piece of a dream almost in your concious, take time to think about it, a lot of your dream(s) will come back to you at that point. I could tell you about the main dream I remember from last night, but its really odd and I don't think most people would understand it. *shrug*

You guys should try to check out a film called Waking Life (directed by Richard Linklater) it's an art film that came about a while back and has interesting ideas about how you can essentially "control" your dreams and how there are ways to realise in your dreams that you're only dreaming.

I've had a few dreams of this kind, a lot of them involve wingsuit BASE in particular (that's ultimately my goal in the sport) - some of the jumps in my dreams don't always go exactly as planned if you know what i mean ;) but after watching this film they've taken a new slant - i no longer stress when i'm about to bite it and in the last few i've had i've consciously said to myself - hey, this is only a dream, oh well, and slammed into the ground only to get up ok. Wierd huh?

Anyway, just my 2 bob. :)

Man, how long did that take you to get over it?

Sounds like you really wish you could fly without a parachute.

They basically have. However, it's still in the back of my mind. What bothers me is that I still remember them so vividly that I became neurotic about checking my equipment and other people's equipment. I give people pin checks and reserve pin checks, harness checks without their consent. I just turn their bodies around for them. I'm turning into a freak.

Dude, I had a dream that I was the one doing a base jump:S (I don't base either) and I swear to god I could feel the impact on my side when I bounced (that's what woke me upB|)...scared the living hell out of me and I can still see the ground and the cliffs like I was actually there[:/]:o...::shiver::...

~R+R:|...That nightmare still scares the hell out of me...
