Where are all the fixed gear riders?

Recommended Posts

Arghhh, god damn hipsters.

Fixies are mandatory with 90s walkmans and caps with the brims flipped all the way up.

I know here in S.A even, the fixie crowd are all hipsters with their Ray Ban Warfarers and skinny jeans cut off at the knee.

Nope, same nice kid only 6'3", 165 and solid muscle. Those ones you describe are who he laughs at. ;):D

Can you show me on a map any hill you cycle which rises 200ft or more in .4km or less?

Do you know of an online topographical map service? Google's terrain feature is WAY too course to be of any use. Being able to show a 10 foot delta would probably be enough.

edit to add: Also, if a map is used, we can only obtain average grade. The average grade of the climb to which Ryoder linked is 11%.

I used to have one of those; no brakes, just your legs. It's a lot of fun to balance at a stop sign or light, then take off, but they are pure hell in hilly terrain. Put me down for a freewheel.
You don't have to outrun the bear.

16% for 0.4 km is a height gain of over 200ft. Can you show me on a map any hill you cycle which rises 200ft or more in .4km or less?
:P

I had to think about it but there are at least four climbs near me that equal to that gradient or are steeper than it. Three are off road and the other is (barely) tarmaced

Ballacob
Slewellyn
Surby
Post Office Hill, Glen May (tarmac)

I've done them all on my geared bikes but I've only done two of them on my singlespeed (32*16). Thinking about it I should be able to do Post Office hill on my s/s. Ballcob isn't going to happen on my s/s though in any way shape or form !

The joy of living on an island - steep hills !!

Being tempted by a roadie s/s atm though as I have 1 1/4" headset spacer bottle opener I could do with using.

Here is a hill for you;
Only 5-6% grade;
It isn't the steep that gets you, but the lack of O2;
I'm good up to 11,000', then breathing becomes a big deal.

Outstanding. That's like two European HCs on top of each other.
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

Awesome :)

I tried to run up a flight of stairs near there in Breckenridge once. 'Once' being the operative word !!

A friend of mine bought a really cool 2nd home near Breck at 11,000' some years back. A retired couple had the house custom built...then discovered they just couldn't handle the altitude, so they sold it w/o ever using it.

Oh, this is a fixed gear thread, right?
I met this dude descending Mt Evans as I was climbing it one morning.

Since we're bragging out our local hills...

This one is, and there is not other way to say it, a bitch

Elevation profiles for those and Flagstaff Mt and Magnolia Road here.
The first 4.5 miles of Magnolia is the nastiest climb I've done.
Note the elevation gives the average elevation for each equal-length segment.

Descending might be the biggest reason I never converted my SS mountain bike to fixed. I've always considered the ability to coast down hills to be the reward of climbing them to begin with.

I don't think that the Tucson ones are right at all... Lemon really doesn't get that steep, and Gates Pass is steeper in some sections that show as moderate.

Guess we'll have to visit each other and test in person! ;)

Damn! I forgot about this. I just learned of this road last winter when it was closed for the season. (It is all gravel). I've ridden past both ends of the road but knew nothing about it. I need to try this. Of course, that darned Taylor Phinney has the Strava KOM for it, at just 6.5mph.

The gravel was only part of the problem;
The goddamned thing is washboarded and has drainage ruts through it!:S

What's people Strava profiles?

mine: http://app.strava.com/athletes/693634

http://app.strava.com/athletes/710517

My 5 & 10 min power numbers are wacked due to a mtn ride where I got rained on and it temporarily plugged plugged the pressure sensor holes, causing the Garmin to think I rode about 10 miles at 35-45mph on level ground, when I was actually descending.
