buying a used pc

Recommended Posts

might be buying a used pc, if it doesnt have restore disks can you buy them from the manufacturer? if so are they priced reasonably?
Is there any self tests you can do to verify that the computers components are in good working order *(other than just turning it on and surfing your fav porn site) :P

i would turn it on and test out all the keys on the keyboard, and then all the usb ports, and try the disc drive, check the log files, and the screen resolution by bringing some hi def pics on a usb and viewing them. as for the restore disc, in win 7 you can make your own with the os and a couple of blank dvd's. you can order them from the manufacturer, it cost me $25 for a toshiba satellite. you may want to get them and do a reinstall of the os when you get it, they get corrupted over time and you don't know what kind of problems it has had in the past(regardless of what you're told).

You can also install linux. It is not that complicated and a lot less bloated than windows.

ty for the info, ended up buying a new tower instead, the guy I was gonna buy from mentioned that the comp shuts itself off randomly, kinda figured either it has a virus or something that I wasnt too keen on trying to track down

The last time I had that problem, it was a bad power supply.

Most common cause for this (OS independent) would actually be over heating, fans die quite often and its not helped by the 1/4" of dust covering the insides of the computer and heat-sinks. (dirt/dust is also a pretty big killer for power supplies as well)

Not in this format, but here is a video on it: http://www.pcworld.com/article/164927/how_to_easily_install_ubuntu_linux_on_any_pc.html

I'm by no means a computer expert but I have ubuntu linux running on an old desktop.
