GratefulDreamer 0 #1 January 28, 2005 I have about 50 jumps and I'm looking for used gear. I have already talked to a rigger and he is on the prowl too, but I really need to know what is right for me. I have so many questions so maybe yall can help me out a little bit... 1. Who and how many people should I talk to about finding gear for me? 2. I weigh 190 and I'm 5'7, would a J5 be too big for my body, and what is the best way to estimate that a rig will fit me well. 3. I have been advised to get a Spectre and thats sounds good I have read that they are really docile, and that is what I need. Does anyone have any other suggestions. I just want something that will just get me on the ground. 4. What websites are reputable? I am constantly searching dropzone. com. Are there any other places I can look. Thats all the questions I can think of so far, but if anyone could add any other advice it is very very welcome. Thanks everyone...Blue Skies... davelepka 4 #2 January 28, 2005 The size of the rig is not related to the size of the harness. With extremely small people, rig size might matter, but you're an average size, and any rig with a proper size harness would be fine. The Javelin is a good choice. The Spectre is also a good choice, speak with your instructors, or the DZ S&TA regardig what size would be best for you. A PD reserve is always a good choice, as is a Cypres. If you buy from a private seller, have your rigger conact them to ask some quesitons. After that, make sure the rigger inspects every purchase (ideally before you make a payment). Open your Parachutist and call every gear dealer advertised, and ask about used equipment. Again, have your rigger involved with this as well.

bmcd308 0 #5 January 28, 2005 >.1. Who and how many people should I talk to about finding gear for me? << Everyone who will listen. Someone at your dz might have a rig just your size in their closet at home. But VERIFY that the gear is suitable by dragging that person over to your rigger and instructors. >>2. I weigh 190 and I'm 5'7, would a J5 be too big for my body, and what is the best way to estimate that a rig will fit me well. << "J5" is a container size, not a harness size. The container size relates to what canopies will fit in the rig, while the harness size relates to whether the rig will fit a particular person. >>3. I have been advised to get a Spectre and thats sounds good I have read that they are really docile, and that is what I need. Does anyone have any other suggestions. I just want something that will just get me on the ground. << Pretty much anything meets your final citeria, including no canopy at all. ;) >>4. What websites are reputable? I am constantly searching dropzone. com. Are there any other places I can look. << Make sure you read all the articles in the gear section of this website. I really do not know of other sites with much beginner gear advice that is not contained in that section of this site. My final bit of advice would be not to get in too big of a hurry to get the gear that you hope to be able to fly someday. Get the gear that will be safe for you now, and buy it used so you can resell it later and get gear that will be safe for you THEN. Buying the main today you hope to be able to land safely later is a great way to get hurt. Buying the main today you hope to be able to land safely later is a great way to get hurt. I think you need to be a little lucky, or very patient to get the first rig on the used market, esp if the target canopy is over 200. I saw many that were close, but not quite right. Some were great deals but would have required me to find a different main for a while. A lot were containers that would be classified "not for freeflying." So I ended up buying a new container and reserve, and then shopping for a canopy and a cypres (didn't save much there). I have a bit of downsizing flexibility on the main, but won't need or want to change the other parts for years. Sadly, didn't end up saving that much money, but 800 bucks is still something, right? Nightingale 0 #7 January 30, 2005 Most of the newbies I know are flying spectres, sabre2s, silhouettes, and pilots. Personally, I love my silhouette. Talk to your instructors about what kind and size of canopy is right for you.
