If you found a bank bag full of money, would you return it to the bank?

Bank courier van spills money on roadway

"Thousands of dollars went missing this afternoon after the doors of a bank courier van opened, causing bags of money to spill out onto the road and people to gather in a frenzy...

"Police recovered about $400, but Lt. Englert said several bags containing "well into six figures" remained missing Wednesday night..."

I would want to say Hell No! but my honest side generally takes precedence on my "I could use this" side...
And almost always get screwed right after that, either by people not thanking you, or spending an hour at the Police Dept to fill-in papers to declare that I found stuff.
Only once I had a very nnice Portuguese man who was so happy to recover his wallet (with no meney left inside[:/]) but with all his documents like residence permit, ID card, drivers license. He brought me a bottle of delicious Vinho Verde from his country.
I guess the bank would do "some gesture" to thank you handing back a 6figures bag of money.

My uncle had a stroke and couldn't work, so he spent his days walking around town. He found a lot of stuff. A bag with over 10k in it. Turned it into the police. It got returned to the owner, an insurance company. They sent him a reward: $10.
U only make 2 jumps: the first one for some weird reason and the last one that you lived through. The rest are just filler.

bastages...
a 5-10% would be deserved in my opinion...

was the bag insured ?? ;)
I would make sure that in the future that insurance would lose at least 10k in "events"

So, so far, we have 7 thieves in our nice little family :( - that's sad.

I figure it all comes back to me one way or another. I'd rather do the right thing. So far I haven't had to make any decisions to give back major chunks of money (like bank bags full!), but I'd like to think the decision-making process wouldn't be any different if it's $10 or $10,000.

I've returned (to the cashier) a wallet that I've found in a gas station bathroom, and turned in other found items before. Just this past weekend after going out to lunch with my parents, I noticed that they only charged us for two meals instead of three, and I encouraged my dad (who had paid) to go back in and correct it. (He made the attempt and the restaurant said "don't worry about it," but we all felt better for having done that. As my mother put it, we wouldn't hesitate to bring it to the restaurant's attention if we were overcharged, so why would we act any differently if we're undercharged?).

I figure it comes back to me when other people also do the right thing. I left my purse outside the company cafeteria a few weeks ago, and in the 10 minutes or so before I realized it was gone, a kind soul had picked it up and brought it into the cafeteria cashiers for safekeeping, all contents intact.

I wouldn't think twice about it. I'd return it. There's no sense in keeping something that's not rightfully yours. Besides, there's that Ying/Yang theory to consider!

Take it buy gold at 100 different locations.

I met a guy in CA that found $23million in a bag containing cash and bank notes from a similar situation. He turned it in and still has the world record for largest find returned. He showed me newspaper articles. etc

He's living in total poverty. The reward was $1000.

His advice to me: "If you ever find that much money, keep it."

23 million? Damn... I probably would have taken a few hundred thousand as a finder's fee! :P

My BF picked up a wallet that a girl had dropped at a gas station. ID, credit cards and a little cash. He was able to get her phone number from directory assistance, so he called her. She did come and get the wallet, and she thanked him but at first she treated him like he was some kind of ax-murderer/stalker/rapist instead of a nice guy trying to do the right thing. Sad world we live in.

You can't steal from a thief. Sons of Bitches already stole it from us.

Whose money do you think is in those bank bags? It's probably a bunch of pick-ups from small mom and pop businesses that deal partially in cash.

And how exactly did the banks steal from you in the first place? They offer a service. They charge a fee for that service. If you don't want that service (ATMs, checking, savings, electronic fund transfers, etc.) store your frickin' money in your basement. If one charges you too much, go to another one.

It's those types of skewed justifications to take from others that really make me shake my head sometimes.

$23 million in a bag? Hmmm. In a former job I moved money -- $6 million in 20s, 50s and 100s filled 6 bags. That was one big friggen bag.

Skewed justifications? Hey Muffie... Bite Me >:(. Those MFRs played willy_nilly w/our monies. Crashed the economy, & were then given another $700 BILLION in TARP funds (AKA: more of our money). If you don't recognize the theft? You're beyond help.

Bank notes and such...may not have all been cash.
