Krip 2 #9 October 29, 2011 Hi 77 I can't imagine being a 21yo pilot during WW2 flying those birdsThen going out on a mission over Mcnasty country and a 25% loss rate could be considered a successful mission, then having to do it again the next day/week.The greatest generation11-11-11 veterans day in the U.S. K-RIP
dzjunky77 0 #10 October 29, 2011 +1 can't even imagine what was going through there minds as they flew them missions. I got the to walk around and privilege inside of a B-17 and a YB-40 Flying Fortress. They were Coming from Anchorage, AK and stopped in Wrangell, AK to fuel up. Both planes were headed for the lower 48. I remember the beauty of those planes flying through the islands and water straights as they took airborne from Southeast, AK. Wish I had a camera

The Collings airplanes made a stop in Wrangel in 2002 when we brought the airplanes to Alaska.SmugMug
dzjunky77 0 #12 October 30, 2011 It probly was the B-24....short memory here but I know the other plane was a B-17 if my memory serves me right. I was working off the Wrangell Island across the bay on Etlon Island for Silverbay Helicopters based out of the Wrangell airport. It sure brighten my day seeing them 2 planes on a cloudy rainy day in Wrangell in front of the small Alaskan terminal.
