Necessary "extras" in a new car

Recommended Posts

I've never bought a new vehicle and probably never will.
When I am buying a used vehicle there are 2 things that I need. I need to be able to sit in the drivers sit with my legs fully extended. I am 6'4" and some vehicles just do not accommodate me. I also look for a vehicle that I am able to sleep in as i do alot of long distance driving.

Aside from that I like something that is good on fuel and easy to maintain.
Have you seen my pants?

i travel for work, driving "marketing vehicles" in other words, anything from a bug to a semi truck with silly graphics. so, number 1.... a good seat. number 2 working cruise control. all else i carry in my pack.... navigation unit, chargers of all kinds, inverter, tunes, maps.(yeah the paper kind, they don't require batteries, and rarely fail.) i don't like built in things, they take waaaaay to long to get fixed when they break. better off set up like i am, just head to a best buy store, to buy a new "whatever just broke."

For those of you who would buy a new car, what are the "extras" that you would consider as something you would "need".

- sunroof
- leather interior
- be Bluetooth enabled
- built in navigation system
- etc..

For SoCal, I'm not so sure leather seating is your best option. You'll know what I mean the first time you leave your car parked at the DZ in August, it's 110° and you find yourself having to leave before sunset.

- I have a sunroof on my car and now that I know better I wish it was not there (then again I did not buy the car new). Sunroofs only add unnecessary weight.

- Leather is a nice option to have if you can afford it and if someone can afford to buy a new car, they likely can afford leather.

- Don't need bluetooth. Too busy driving to worry about interfacing with some electronic gizmo.

- Unless you are a courier or taxi driver, a built in navigation system is not needed on an everyday basis. But it could come in handy when you travel out of town to new places.

Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

the bolded is very true. It seems the more gadgets you have in your car, the easier things break and the more expensive it is to repair.

My first car, I had cruise control and, while on a long drive from WI to IA, I fell asleep while driving (with the car on cruise:| ) . So, the next car I got, I got it without cruise.

On the other hand . . . I really like driving on a winding road in the cool of the evening with the sunroof pulled back and all the windows down. The wind whipping around like cool water and listening to every nuance of the engine and hiss of the tires as I round a corner.

YMMV.

I, love my ragtop (which only added 14 lbs.) and listening to the roar of the engine.

what's a "roll cage"?

The key is what do YOU want. Obviously, not all that you want is practical/affordable. [:/]

Add to that: How long do you plan to keep this car? A year or two?(10-20K). Long enough to drive it into the dirt? (100-200K). The longer you plan on keeping the car, the more the small luxuries will make a difference, and the less they will cost in the long run.

Personally, I wouldn't want to buy a car (again) without A/C. And unless you are planning on taking your new car to the track or driving around like an idiot, a Role Cage is not necessary.

If I do buy a new car, I would keep it long enough to drive it to the ground. Unlike my husband who likes to trade in his car every few years, I like running my car for as long as possible. The car I have now (also a Civic), has almost 300K miles on it and is about 11 years old.

I do see the point about the more electronic gadgets I have, the easier things break and the pricier it is to repair/replace. My husband had to replace the navigation system in his car recently and that was pretty pricey.

Roll Cage
Cruise Control

Makes no sense. You can only use a Roll Cage on the track while you are wearing a helmet (driving a Roll Cage equiped car without a helmet is asking for it), but why would you want Cruise Control for the track?

That makes no sense. What about a roll cage requires a track while wearing a helmet? What about Cruise Control requires a track?

Very good point, and repair prices are going way up. A coworker's Escalade is costing $700+ for a speedometer replacement. :S:o

:S jeez.

Yeah, I don't want to leave Korea... Our hoppdie had an electrical problem that was affecting the power windows and A/C. Cost us a whopping $100 for the guy to chase wires for three hours and fix the problem.

And I'm with the OP, I want leather seats (and I'm from the south). I hate the way cloth seats smell after a few months to a year of owning the car. The trick is to go for the tan leather, not black, and to keep a towel handy on sunny/hot days.

Sunroof is nice...

Leather is easier to clean and wears better if you take care of it...

Blue tooth? I talk with my phone on the side of my head when I need too, I don't frequently make calls. Bluetooth is just a bandaide for the fact that too many idiots have drivers licenses.

Navigation, nope. The hand helds are way cheaper, easier to update, and IMHO better products.

Best feature, value! Buy a used low mileage car with a CPO warranty. I won't ever buy a new car when you can get such great financing on used cars (my credit union financed my last one at 3.5%). New cars take too much of a hit right off the lot!!
