sundevil777 102 #1 September 3, 2011 I got a new MacBook Pro for my son to use - his college program is Mac based blah blah..looks at empty wallet... Anyway, I want to confirm whether the antivirus/antiwhatever products that are made for Macs are a waste of time or not. What do you think? I'm out of my 'zone' on this one, I know very well you gotta stay really well covered for my PCs, but it seems like everyone with a Mac does nothing, despite there being so many software packages made for Macs - hard to believe it is all developed when there is no need. Thanks!People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
BobbyR1990 0 #2 September 3, 2011 lets put it this way. There are viruses for macs, but not many at all (people just don't care to make them since there isn't a big enough market share yet). But the ones that are out there Apple does not offer any support. In fact they deny that any vulnerabilities are there. I'd say as long as your son doesn't download anything stupid then he'll be fine. Same thing as using windows, I haven't gotten a virus in years just because I'm smart about what I download
skydiver30960 0 #3 September 3, 2011 I know the threat is minimal, but take another look at that empty wallet and think: is a few bucks more for the protection really worth saving? Especially in light of the "no support" comment from above. Elvisio "baby, I SWEAR, that porn site just popped up there! murrays 0 #4 September 3, 2011 I've been using Macs personally and at work for 11 years. I've installed a couple of different AV programs over the years and always wound up taking them off. I really don't worry about viruses on my Macs at all.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Same thing as using windows, I haven't gotten a virus in years just because I'm smart about what I download I appreciate what you say about being smart about downloading, but I've had my local trusted PC doctor tell me that there are so many viruses that are had from sites that are so seemingly innocent, such as kid's game sites. Perhaps those viruses are the more initially benign in nature, but they eventually use up resources, blah blah. Do Macs have that sort of anti-spyware/adware/whatever built in, or are they just not vulnerable? For my PCs, besides current antivirus, I love adblocker addons to Firefox - so nice to not have ads and all that web tracking bullshit, and I've already added that to the Mac. Thanks is it just me, or does anybody comprhend wtf you just said? Just being a bit cynical. This isn't my first encounter with a Mac, but it certainly reminds me that I've never understood how people think that they are more intuitive to use. Everything is so convoluted. I suppose that people studying how the human brain works should study how people adapt when going from PC to Mac or the other way around.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. VideoFly 0 #15 September 5, 2011 The last problem I had on my Mac was some kind of worm in the late 90's. I fixed it pretty easily.
oldwomanc6 60 #16 September 5, 2011 This may be simplistic, but It's not that they aren't less vulnerable, but that not as many are writing nasty-grams (yet). The more popular Macs become, the more likely (and productive-meaning destructive on a wide-spread basis) someone writing a virus targeting Macs will become.lisa WSCR 594 FB 1023 CBDB
