The Left Lane

Recommended Posts

I live in the Chicagoland area, were IL had built an awesome 3-lane I-355 extension and had cut my driving time to work by 25 minutes, instead of the normal 45. It extends through a lot of developing areas, so traffic is pretty light.

One morning, driving to work, I approach a car in the left lane going the same speed as the car in the middle lane. And the car in front of me continued to the same speed. At this point, I tend to get a little pissed >:(. I'm mean c'mon at least be considerate! Either speed up, slow down, and move over so I can pass.

Needless to say, the car eventually creeped up and moved over. And it was a woman! I really don't know what it is, but woman drivers tend drive much slower then men. Not to bash on all the women out there, just the majority. :P

Anybody else get into "pissed off" situations like this?

25 minutes? Wow, traffic must be really bad. My wife is 12 minutes from her office and I'm about the same. B|

I'm guessing your near L.A.? I'd get furious just thinking about L.A. traffic.

I would just like to say I am a woman and get pissed off with slow drivers in the left lane just as much as you. I wish we had laws like that for the Autobahn - go pretty freaking fast and move the hell over, left lane only for passing.

Right on! I think I would have a new hobby if that was reality. B|

Dawdlers in the left lane are one of my pet peeves. In fact, in some states, it illegal to hang out there without actively overtaking the cars in the right lane. I wish it was that way in all 50.

However, your characterization that women are the primary offenders is ridiculous. The same argument could be made about age and race, or East v. Left coasters (people West of the Mississippi are much better than East).

The worst offenders are in fact people on the phone. You can tell them a mile away; inconsistent speed, weaving, and general oblivious, cluelessness. When you finally get past the road block that they are, you can look in their car as you pass, and sure enough, yack, yack, yack! And no, women don't talk on the phone in the car any more than men :D

It's a pretty petty thing to get worked up about. a few MPH here or there doesn't really matter much. I pretty much consider it a nice bonus when other drivers are paying attention to the traffic around them. But I don't expect it nowadays.

eh, i don't get upset when someone is going slow in the left lane. I mean, it's annoying and unsafe to pass them on the right, but I will.

What IS annoying is when they go the SAME SPEED as the car next to them...and it's slow. *sigh*

As long as they are doing the posted speed limit, they are doing nothing wrong. It is against the law to go faster than the posted limit to pass someone who is doing the posted limit.
But of course, I would never go faster than what is posted:);)

Interesting tidbit. Note, I do have a history of road rage, but have simmered down the last 5 or 6 years.

Tonight I'm driving home from a party with my wife and kids, and upon exiting a construction zone where the speed limit goes from 55 to 70 mph, and I gradually up the speed to almost 80 mph in the left lane. Up ahead, a Ford Mustang pulls out from the middle lane to the left to pass another car then moves back over to the middle. I am just about to pass the mustang, when the fuckhead decides uh uh and speeds up. I'm on cruise control so I'm in no fucking mood to fuck around with another fuckhead, so as soon as he pulls ahead, I move immediately behind him at about a 1 second gap. He slowly bled off speed down to 70 and I was more than happy to oblige, for a little while, maintaining that 1 second gap.

Apparently that rattled his cage enough that when I pulled back out to the left lane and pushed the speed back up to 80, he left me alone. Hey, its night time and my vehicle is bigger than his.

Stupid fuckers.

Wrong. In CA it is against the law to impede the flow of traffic. In many cases it is a tell tale sign of driving under the influence.

actually, its that... + they are driving a lowered import, sporting a coffee can muffler and some silly paint job, and they decide to that the right lane is for passing, when I am in the middle, passing another rig. (I contract drive promotional show rigs). Well, they either get lucky and make it by, or get pushed into the shoulder. Damn fuckers, when did the right lane become a passing lane? oh, and a lesson in physics... I weight at least 35,000 pounds in a low weight rig, vs. your 3,000 to 4,000 pound car. You.... will.... loose.

You are correct, if one is driving under the posted speed limit when conditions are favorable for the posted limit. However, one can never legally drive faster than the posted limit. Let's say that the flow of traffic is moving at the posted limit of 45mph. I am driving at 45mph as is the care ahead of me and the car ahead of them and so on... I cannot legally speed up to 50mph in order to pass a vehicle that is moving at the posted limit. Likewise, if the vehicle ahead of me is moving at 30mph in a 45mph zone, I can speed up to the 45mph limit, but no faster, to pass.

http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/hdbk/speed_limits.htm

And now for something funny...

Sitting on the side of the expressway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a State Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 22 MPH. He thinks to himself, "This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!" So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over.

Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies, two in the front seat and three in the back, wide eyed and white as ghosts.

The driver, obviously confused, says to him, "Officer, I don't understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?"

"Ma'am," the officer replies, "You weren't speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers."

"Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly twenty-two miles an hour!" the old woman says a bit proudly.

The State Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that "22" was the route number, not the speed limit.

A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer for pointing out her error.

"But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask… Is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven't muttered a single peep this whole time," the officer asks.

"Oh, they'll be all right in a minute officer. We just got off Route 142." :D:D:D:D

My rig is 32,000+ EMPTY.
I'm a jumper. Even though I don't always have money for jumps, and may not ever own a rig again, I'll always be a jumper.

+1 on that one. With the newer cars nowadays, they typically comes standard with bluetooth. So yacking on the phone is much easier. Texting is starting to become a problem. Yes, I've done it, but at least be aware of what is around you. I pass people and see their eyes glued to their lap. I'm curious to know how many rear endings happen because people text or talk on the phone without being aware of what is around them? And the solution is right around the corner: :D

I have a a lot of respect for you truck drivers. With big rigs like that, they take a long time to stop. So, I sometimes see cars cutoff rigs just when traffic is coming to a halt and having the rig end up slamming on his brakes. Very stressfull.

Driving while pissed off is just as dangerous as some idiot going slow in the fast lane. You get into revenge mode instead of focusing on drive safely.

I hear you though, people that don't know how to work a 4-way stop (waiting their turn), people that buy cars without blinkers, texting/on their phones, driving the wrong speed in their lane, people that don't get up to traffic speed entering a freeway, all used to annoy the shit out of me. I've been in a bunch of arguments and one fight driving, in the end nothing changes, the stupid will continue to breed other stupid people, and that's just life. We have to live amongst them, being pissed is wasting your life.

Instead of listening to some punk rock or metal while I drive (in traffic times), I put on the jazz station and just chill. That helps me not to be annoyed. This and that that pisses you and I off
doesn't/wont matter in a hundred years, we'll all be dead, and no one will remember.

Be glad you you're not stupid and that these people aren't flying canopies in traffic with you.

Don't let stupidity make you sweat.

Careful there. If he has a similar history of road rage - and is perhaps a little earlier in the process than you are - he could slam on his brakes, cause a collision, and then have you pay for a new car for him and his medical care for a variety of ailments for years.

Wrong. If you are going slower than the flow of traffic you can get a ticket. I have seen it happen.
