Butters 0 #1 March 30, 2011 I'm looking for stouts to try (the darker and stronger the better). Lately I've been drinking stouts that have been aged in whisky/ey or bourbon barrels ... delicious!"That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

NWFlyer 2 #3 March 30, 2011 If you find yourself in Reno, go to Brew Brothers and try their double chocolate caramel stout. Unfortunately, I think you can only get it at the pub, but ... yum. Stouts and porters, now this is my kind of thread. None of that damn how much hops can we put in the beer IPA shit. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. But you kinda have to go to a specialty place not just a grocery store. I get mine at World of Beer or Total Wine, but I don't know if they have those near you.... Are those actually chocolatey like Young's? I've tried a lot of "chocolate" beers and they've never actually tasted chocolatey at all. There are hints and whispers of it but no actual "yea thats chocolate" taste.

billvon 2,991 #13 March 30, 2011 >I'm looking for stouts to try (the darker and stronger the better). Here's a quick list of my favorites: Lost Abbey Older Viscosity. Darkest, strongest stout you will ever try. Barrel aged. Looks like old motor oil. Lost Abbey Angel's Share. Avoid 2009, but the rest of the years are great. Barrel aged in bourbon barrels. Goose Island Bourbon County. Another great one. Let this one age a few years; it just gets better. Deschutes Abyss. If you ever see this anywhere - buy it. A truly great stout. Aged in bourbon and pinot barrels. Deschutes Obsidian. Not as complex as abyss but a good stout. Firestone Walker 14th Anniversary. Very rare but very good. Firestone Walker Velvet Merlin. Also a barrel aged stout. Easier to find than 14th. Port Brewing/Santa's Little Helper (barrel aged edition) Nice stout, less aggressive than some of the others here. Label was banned by the California liquor board! Swooper Stout. Available only in San Diego.
billvon 2,991 #14 March 30, 2011 >Are those actually chocolatey like Young's? Some of the most chocolatey beers I've had have had no actual chocolate in them. I make a stout that gets its color/flavor from darker grains that has a lot of chocolate and caramel flavor in it - but all just grain.
kawisixer01 0 #15 March 30, 2011 Some of goose island stuff is pretty good. If you come north of the border look for new glarus stuff. I am a pretty avid new glarus brewery drinker. Also like some of the stuff out of point (stevens point), minhas (monroe), capital (madison), and of Grays right here in Janesville. Grays has an awesome "bully porter". I definately believe in "Drink Local"!

kevin442 0 #17 March 30, 2011 I’m brewing a chocolate cherry stout right now that should finish just over 8%ABV. It’s the chocolate stout with lactose sugar that I usually do but I am adding 3 lbs of cherry pure to the secondary

My favorite is Berkshire Brewing Company Russian Imperial Stout on a nitrogen line. The nitro gives it the creamy perfection. Also big fan of Pretty Things Babbayaga because it's so weird. Troubadour Obscura is my favorite Belgian stout. O'Hara's is the best Irish Stout.
