PiLFy 3 #27 March 22, 2011 Hi Nat, How about you give her the best gift you can? Give her your time. Give her a Wonka Ticket, redeemable for one full afternoon w/her Aunt Nat

I also loved Madeline as a kid. It was one of my favorites.

Give her a Wonka Ticket, redeemable for one full afternoon w/her Aunt Nat Awesome idea, but I'm not working at the moment, so a flight to Canada is a bit out of my budget! But I still really like the idea - maybe when she's a bit older we can explore the possibility of flying her to Europe to visit me "There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss
wmw999 2,534 #32 March 22, 2011 I had each of my nephews visit for a week when they were about 10. It was a huge success. But 5 is young for that, even if you had an awesome job. Nataly 38 #33 March 22, 2011 Quote I had each of my nephews visit for a week when they were about 10. It was a huge success. But 5 is young for that, even if you had an awesome job. No kidding!! Besides, she probably wouldn't even remember it!!! I've just asked one of my friends if she would make my niece a hat. My brother's spouse just posted the cutest pics of her with her new hat and my friend makes these amazing crochet hats... But I just thought of it and my niece's birthday is in just under 2 weeks, which doesn't give my friend enough time!! If she agrees to make one, I think I will send a small gift in the meantime and send the hat when it's ready. davjohns 1 #36 March 23, 2011 Didn't we do this last year?I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.
piisfish 140 #37 March 23, 2011 Quote I would like to give her something that will last a long time and that has links to her French[-Canadian] or British heritage (her mom's side emigrated from England). In previous years, I got her a Paddington Bear (and book), a Roald Dahl box-set, a (real) tea set, a red coat (similar to Paddington's trench). Can't for the life of me think of anything this year, though... She's too young for a mini scooter!! If anyone has ideas, I would be very grateful... now you are in France, get her a Tour Eiffel. nigel99 568 #39 March 23, 2011 Quote5-year-olds like toys. It's what they do. If she already has a camera, she really doesn't need a second one. Legos and clay are fun at that age, as are dolls (yes, they're sexist, but, well, they are popular, and if there are grandmothers, they can make extra doll clothes -- that's a memory that lasts a long time. Royal Wedding stuff just teaches her to pay attention to celebrities. Who needs that. While tunnel time is a great idea, wait for a few years, and then she'll actually remember it. Wendy P. Wendy - need to defend my suggestion. My sister was given royal wedding crap when Diana got married. She is not into celebs but was into the whole "princess" thing. Big white weddings married to a prince yada yada. Besides over in the US you can't turn around without being asked about the frigging wedding! Anyway hijack over - hopefully Nataly finds something cool.Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

It fits into gender-stereotypes, but lots of girls *do* love them... So I see where you were coming from. It was a good idea, but I just didn't see anything that didn't make me cringe!! Maybe a Madeline book or two and a Madeline costume? Madeline is a story about a French orphan girl. There was also a movie made. My older girl loves it.
