jrmrangers 0 #1 March 22, 2011 I've done a few tandems already and I'm starting the first jump course on Sunday. So my question is at what point does the transformation from whuffo to skydiver start? Is it like when the wolf man sees the moon kind of thing, or is it more subtle? Is it painful and does it ever where off?Wait , I pull what first? So my question is at what point does the transformation from whuffo to skydiver start? Is it like when the wolf man sees the moon kind of thing, or is it more subtle? Is it painful and does it ever where off? There are more opinions on this than there are skydivers. Tandem != Skydiver but I think a person who does a tandem "gets" why people skydive to some degree. Whuffo (as you probably know) is for "what for you jump out of..." so in my view a tandem who "gets it" is no longer a whuffo but still not a skydiver. During training a person is a student skydiver. After that I think some people get it in their blood and they can't hear a turbine without longing for the sky, or they walk along looking at the sky wishing they were up. You are a skydiver in your heart - you get people who get the dreamy far away look when thinking about jumping 20 or 30 years ago. Some people simply do a couple of jumps for bragging rights or a bucket list and they don't "get it". I don't know what you call them though...Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

thomas.n.thomas 0 #7 March 22, 2011 I always tell people when they ask that I am a student. I won't consider myself a skydiver until I'm licensed. It's kind of like telling people you drive when you're still on your learner's permit and need a parent with you. Yeah, it's driving, but with a safety blanket. Once I'm able to go jump without someone looking over my shoulder, then I will be a skydiver - it scares me more than a little bit, but everyone tells me the ride is worth it, and so far I can't disagree. popsjumper 2 #12 March 22, 2011 Congrats! I noticed that you are at the Ranch. Lots of good people there. Go for it! I like to think there are two different groups here...jumpers and skydivers. Jumpers: Simply like to jump out of aircraft. Skydivers: Like to jump out of aircraft, too and they know what they are doing. I hope you grow into a skydiver. Since you already know why we jump, you're no longer a wuffo and you'll never be a wuffo again. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. Andy9o8 2 #14 March 22, 2011 Quoteat what point does the transformation from whuffo to skydiver start? IMO, it starts, regardless of the type of jump (including tandems), the instant you exit from an aircraft in flight.
