fossg 0 #1 February 15, 2011 A moment of silence for my beloved "road warrior". (a 99 Saturn SL, 200,000 miles on it) It gave up the ghost on Friday afternoon while I was comuteing to work I will raise a beer in its memory this coming Sunday at the DZ
wolfriverjoe 1,523 #2 February 15, 2011 ... Sorry for your loss. The older Saturns were really great cars. I had a 92 SL2 that was a lot of fun. Are you sure it's really dead? fossg 0 #4 February 15, 2011 The main seal blew... It would cost 4 grand to drop another engine in it. I got a PT crusier to replace it.

You should have been able to get a rebuilt put in for a lot less than that. But that can depend a lot on where you are. It definitely wouldn't be worth putting a $4k engine in a car worth less than $2k. Did you toast the engine when the seal blew? Oh, well. At least you have the memories."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." jonstark 8 #9 February 15, 2011 My 94 Saturn Wagon made it 250,000 and was still going strong when I traded it in for a thousand bucks on a new car. jon

Sorry your car puked out on you. I'm 300+ miles away from 200K on my Escort commuter McCar. I'd be cool with ditching it, but V and the kids just gave me a new digital radio for Christmas, with my son doing the install. It'd be a shame to have it die now. I think Skydive Arizona still does Trash Day out of the Skyvan. You have to be AFF-I rated to jump with the trash I believe. And if its a car, they will require the roof be cut off it if you plan to ride it out the tailgate. My '96 Mazda Protege is still going strong after 215K miles, though I do have to add a quart of oil in between each oil change."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban

I'm hoping it holds out until my 2001 Toyota Tundra reaches 200K miles too. It would be cool to have two vehicles over 200K each. Could be a while though. Truck is at 170K now and I don't work. fossg 0 #13 February 15, 2011 The "kiss of death" for the car was my deployment. I was gone for 2 years. SOME people did not run my car as requested and as a result everything turned to crap I put about 3000 into it in the last 6 months. I had to throw in the towel
warpedskydiver 0 #14 February 15, 2011 The worst thing to do to a car is improper storage, just to mothball a car properly is a huge undertaking. I had a friend who sold his 1970 LS6 Chevelle SS to another friend, that guys wife did not want him to drive it anymore because "the baby was coming" So into the shed it went, on blocks and covered well. Fast forward 20years, original owner wants to buy it back, they go into the shed and peel the cover off, nothing but rust. The only thing that survived was the glass, everything else was ruined beyond saving, even the motor was worthless for rebuilding. Heat, cold, humidity, lack of circulation, no lubrication where needed, all sorts of good stuff.

My barometer for bailing out of a car is if it costs me more than $1000/yr for 2-3 yrs in a row or if I suspect that the car will leave me stranded or broken down it's outta here!
