JohnMitchell 16 #26 February 1, 2011 Quote Like making sure a trigger is set on a handgun that is supposed to be "loaded." Have you ever seen the Jamie Lee Curtis movie "Blue Steel"? Basically a psycho gets hold of a S &W Model 29 revolver, .44 mag ( yep, same as Dirty Harry) and goes on a killing spree. At each crime scene the police recover a body and shell casings. I kept wondering why any killer would take the time to eject his empties and reload at the crime scene. Then it dawned on me . . . the writers/directors thought ALL handguns ejected their empty shell cases like semi-autos do. Talk about spoiling a movie then and there. Would it have been too hard to have the psycho carrying a Beretta 92 or Colt .45? If you really had to have a .44 mag, you could have sprung for a Desert Eagle or Auto Mag.I see now that a lot of casts will undertake more extensive training before doing war movies, cop movies etc. There are varying degrees of success at achieving realism. Man, I hate seeing dumb gun handling in movies.

One John Wayne Western, I can't remember which, he takes a rifle shot to the back from 30-40 feet away. Instead of falling down bleeding, he's reaction was to turn, scowl, and say "Okay, now I'm mad."

One of the guys I idolized growing up was USN riverine in Vietnam. Someone should have told him that stuff was all hollywood, because he took part in some crazy shit while drunk/baked out of his gourd and had the photos, commendations, and shark skin uniforms to prove it. gonzalesna 0 #41 February 2, 2011 As an EOD tech, I can tell you we neither condone nor encourage the shooting of IED's with anything. We approach as needed when remote means of operation are not available for use or are not sufficient to complete the desired task, be it blow in place or render safe. That being said, The Hurt Locker was a retarded movie and has no relevance to actual EOD work outside of the concept that we work with explosives, respond to IED's and are military personnel. Some people refrain from beating a dead horse. Personally, I find a myriad of entertainment value when beating it until it becomes a horse-smoothie.
philly51 0 #42 February 2, 2011 In every western's street scene(s), there is never a pile of road apples in sight. Also, the women in western's wear white ankle length dresses that somehow remain white. Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, Shouting "...holy shit...what a ride!" Yes, but see, most of us are less concerned with accuracy and more concerned with how hot Jeremy Renner was in that role. Or.... maybe that was just me. Actually, I really did enjoy that movie, being blissfully ignorant of whatever inaccuracies it may have had.

wmw999 2,527 #45 February 2, 2011 Movies are not the same as instructional videos on complex subjects. Experts tend to critique them as though they were. Consider the activing and narrative qualities of your average instructional video. There's a reason they have to pay you to go see it, rather than the other way around. AggieDave 6 #47 February 2, 2011 QuoteMan, I hate seeing dumb gun handling in movies. In the latest Terminater movie with Christian Bale, one of the things that made me smile was the outstanding transition from his M4 to his side arm when shooting the thing in the water. It was fluid and looked correct. Regardless of the rest of the movie, that move was obviously taught and practiced by someone who knew what they were doing.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." LouDiamond 1 #48 February 2, 2011 As much as I like the movie Saving Private Ryan, the scene during the beach landing where they consolidate behind the berm and assemble the bangalore torpedo and then they push it forward like it was nothing had me rolling my eyes. I know from experience that what they did was not as easy as it looked since each section contains 13lbs of explosive plus the metal it is encased in brings each section to roughly 15 lbs. Connect even a few of them together and try pushing them forward while laying prone and it becomes quickly apparent that it is no easy task, and thats on perfectly flat ground with no obstructions. Not to mention their proximity to it when they detonated it, those things absolutely rock your world when they go off and you're a realistic distance from it."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
