katzurki 0 #1 March 15, 2005 So there are a few world-leading manufacturers that everybody knows, and a bunch of local ones that might or might not be known outside their country (e.g., Russia has a number of container brands that are quite good for the buck and practically unknown overseas -- I know of but one Spirit container sold to a US customer... TSO is probably the biggest problem here). So are there possibly skydiving gear manufacturers in countries like Japan, Korea, China or other countries (rigs/canopies wise)? Or do they all rely on imported rigs?

bob.dino 1 #3 March 16, 2005 Parachutes Australia manufacture the Talon 3 & Talon FS that are sold in the US by Rigging Innovations. I believe the original Talon was an RI design; I don't know who did the design and testing for the FS.
Chrisky 0 #4 March 16, 2005 Japan has some skydiving as far as I know, Korea and China as well as the rest of asia (with the exception of Thailand and Singapore and theit big boogies) don't seem to have any recreational skydiving. And where there are no people jumping, few are inclined to build and jump their own rig. There are two or three to five manufacturers in Germany (Paratec, Performance Variable, HiPer, Airtec etc.).The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Not every Swooper hooks & not every Hooker swoops ...
katzurki 0 #5 March 16, 2005 Oh. I really wonder if there is any inner Japanese manufacturer.
riggerrob 643 #6 March 16, 2005 Flying High manufactures TSOed Sidewinder harness/containers in Canada. Sidewinders look like Vector 2s updated almost to Mirage or Icon standards.

(Australian-built) Talon FS looks like Talon 3 built by RI.
Canuck 0 #8 March 16, 2005 Think you have that switched around Rob. Talon FS is American made (at least mine was, as were the other 20 or so on my DZ) and the Talon 3 is Australian made. Canuck
bob.dino 1 #9 March 16, 2005 The FS is definitely made in Australia too. Nice containers, and there's something to be said for having the factory 20min up the road from my DZ...

Cookie 0 #11 March 17, 2005 PA's first rigs were a vector(Wonder Hog) copy, these were called a Pigmee. PA obtained the Talon rights for australia back in the late 80's as PA was already manufacturing the pigme as well as the airforce reserve, Viper and X228/300 canopies. The Aussie won a gold medal in 8way speed crew on the x228's Zipper who owns PA and Poo Smith ( Ex Australian 8/4way guys) modify the Talon in the early 90's. This change flowed through to RI. I believe that RI and PA work hard together on there innovative designs. I was greatfully sponsored by PA from 1997 to 2000. I still have a my sponsored rigs in the cupboard and wont part with them for sentimental reasons. The Talon 3 and FS are excellent rigs, I didn't like the Voodoo much, I didn't really like the shape etc. But that my opinion. Unfortunately now due to other Team mates choices I jump a different rig. Sorry for detracting from the original thread, I hope I have shed some light Cookie
riggerrob 643 #12 March 17, 2005 The Talon design is essentially taken/copied from the RW Vector.... >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The first Talons (1985) were similar to Vectors, you could swap pilot chutes and packing methods, without Sandy grumbling too loudly. Oh wait a minute, Sandy was head of 3-Ring Inc. (a subsidiary of the Uninsured Relative Workshop) before moving to California. However, Rigging Innovations started to diverge when they introduced the Stealth pilotchute (small cap and red spring) and molar-bag with the Flexon in 1992. By 1994, they cross-loaded the Stealth pilotchute and molar bag to the "94 Talon. The Talon 2 (94 Talon wiht the bugs worked out), Genera, Telesis 2 and Aviator (all introduced in 1997) continued with Stealth pilotchutes and molar-bags. Voodoo is basically a Talon 2 sized for tiny mains with some innovations in the main container and leg straps. Talon 3 & FS back-load some Voodoo features to Talon 2.
