Sleep Deprivation

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone out there had any funny sleep deprivation stories. I just got back from an exercise, and at one point, I went to sleep sitting in a chair while my aircraft commander was talking to me. When I snapped out of it a couple of seconds later, it took me a minute to remember where I was and what I was doing. Being sleep deprived SUCKS. B|

Mine always seem to be around major jet lag. I don't usually sleep well on planes, so on long redeye flights I'll arrive pretty sleep deprived. One time when my brother was stationed in the UK, we decided to meet up in Ireland and travel together for a week since neither of us had been there. I did the redeye into Dublin, went to the hotel and checked in, and he was set to arrive at a more humane time a few hours later. So, I took a little nap till he got there.

When he got there, he said he'd been banging on the hotel room door for about a minute or two before I got there. Even after I got up I was completely disoriented as to where I was, or who would possibly be at the door. Fortunately, I did recognize my own brother when I did open the door. :D

I worked grave yard shift for 7 years and for a couple of years got maybe 4 hours a sleep a day. I have fallen asleep doing most everything but the best one is after 4 hours of sleep I went to the gym and while running on a tread mill I fell asleep. I started out just closing my eyes next thing i know I hit the deck and was spit out the back of the machine

Your Aircraft Commander most likely understood, for it had probably happened to him more than once, well hopefully not at the controls

Seems to have turned out well... :P

...well enough anyways.

Once I fell asleep sitting on a wooden bench. No back support. Arms crossed over my chest.
I woke up 2.5 hours later, sitting in the same position (upright). For me it seemed that I only blinked. How much time does blink of an eye last??? But when I checked the time I saw that I`m missing two and a half hours of my life. :o

At the time I was working two jobs, sleeping eight hours every two days.
I endured just three months living like that.:|

When I got back from VN, I had had maybe 12 hours sleep in the previous week. and none in the privious 72 hours. My best friend met me at the airport at 8 AM and proceded to show me around Jacksonville, how things had changed. Around 4 PM, I have no idia where we were, the walkway started moving. It looked to me like tha pictures of "Galloping Gerty". Walls were waving, everything sounded wierd. I'm talking MAJOR halucinations. And no, we had not even had a beer, being only 20 years old. He took me home, I fell into bed and woke up 28 hours later.

I've never had to go that long without sleep. I occasionally pull a grave yard shift at work, and have real trouble getting much sleep before them. Once, after the shift, I had been sleeping for a half an hour when the DZ called and said they had a bunch of tandems, so off I went to go jumping all day. So maybe 40 hours on half an hour of sleep, hardly a record. It didn't cause any problems. You can't fall asleep in freefall, no way.:D
