Sure, they made it work this time, but that looked like extreme precip, the kind I steer pilots around all day. It would have been very easy to run into a microburst on final. Those have crashed more than a few airplanes. Hopefully their experience bucket got fuller, and not the one that confuses luck with skill. Wendy P.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. I've seen a LOT worse. It was an option to go away for the 15 minutes that the cell needed to pass but the level of complexity for going missed and asking for a hold somewhere would have been more of a PITA than the weather here warranted. I've done this in aircraft ranging from Gulfstreams to light taildraggers. Ground handling the taildraggers was the worst part of the deal. jon
 futuredivot 0 #7 January 3, 2011 Sure I would...if I were completely out of fuel and the plane was on fire. So I'll defer to captain's digression. Except for one way. If they had to go around for any reason, they'd have been smack in the heart of that thunderstorm. All in all that was stupid.
