JohnRich 4 #1 December 24, 2010 New Craig's List user... I'm trying to sell some old crap on Craig's List. For some reason, after listing several items, they come back and want to verify my phone number again. And when I enter it, it tells me I already have an account with that number. Doh! Yes, that's the account I'm using to try to add more listings. Why does it want to re-verify my phone, and then not let me continue? How do I avoid this problem? It locks me out for an entire day, and then seems to clear up the next day. Anyone with Craig's List experience know what's going on here? Neither Craig's List nor other internet help sites provide the answer. And even more maddening, is that you then lose all the work you put into formatting a listing - it won't let you go back to the edit screen from there. sdctlc 0 #3 December 24, 2010 Ran into that the other day. Just requested for a text to my phone. Showed up about 2 min later and no issues following that to post an add. I had not had to do it previously but whatever, not a big deal. Scott"He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"
JohnRich 4 #4 December 24, 2010 QuoteI have only used email response. I have never had any problem listing a item for sale. I see no option for an e-mail response. It seems to be a phone number only. Where do you get that option? Quote: "Phone authentication is used to help us enforce our terms of use, and more specifically, to keep the number of accounts users create to a minimum, thus preventing spam and overposting." So maybe this is an over-posting issue, but I'm only trying to add my second listing for today. That doesn't seem like "over-posting" to me. What are the limits? That doesn't seem to be an option now - it's a phone number or you don't get in. And this seems to be annoying a lot of people, according to internet chat. Heck, people are giving Craig's List public pay phone numbers in order to get around the problem. But then you gotta be there to answer the pay phone, to get the code which allows you to continue. JohnRich 4 #9 December 24, 2010 I figured out that you can post an ad without logging on to your account, and that works by e-mail. But then after posting the ad that way, it doesn't show up in the for-sale section in which I listed it, nor using the search function. So where the heck is my ad? It's there according to the link in the confirming e-mail, but it's not there in any other way...

JohnRich 4 #14 December 25, 2010 QuoteWhats the link? Next day - the ad still does NOT appear. It DOES show up in my list of ads in "my account". Here's the ad link: http://houston.craigslist.org/bks/2128242866.html Note that it says it's in the Houston books section. So then go to the Houston Craigslist, books section, and do a search for that book title: http://houston.craigslist.org/search/bks?query=semper+fi&srchType=T&minAsk=&maxAsk= And you get "nothing found". Is it viewable by the public? Or not? Go figure...

Is it viewable by the public? Or not? Go figure... Here's the problem, your ad got "Ghosted". That's one of the sneaky, underhanded things that Craigslist does to keep the spammers away, but they screwed up and put that function on steroids, now nobody is immune to getting Ghosted. The only that I have come up with to get the ghosted ad to show is to make another ad, and write it so that it says something that will point the surfer to the ghosted ad. And you will need to take to URL from your email and make it into a clicky. Make the redirect ad something like, "There's a really good deal on a Corvette for sale in this Craigslist ad!" (or what ever product you are selling.) And add the URL as a clicky. The best thing to do to keep from getting flagged is to use the Craigslist ad URL as the anchor text. That way they see a Craigslist URL and it don't raise any red flags to the flaggers. As far as I know, there's no way to get around it, Nobody knows how to get around it, and nobody has figured out a way to stop them from doing that. for more info, just Google the words "Craigslist Ghosting" and you will get all the info you need. JohnRich 4 #16 December 26, 2010 Well, thank you for the education on "ghosting". That's the first time I've heard of that. Reading up on that horrid technique used by Craig's List, I'm thinking that the ad may have been made invisible because it contained a link to an Amazon page. That link was just to show what the item sells for elsewhere, for comparison purposes, but I can see how that link could be construed by their unthinking software as trying to re-direct a sale to someplace else. So, I'll try re-posting the darned thing without that link and see what happens. What a mess! Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Like I said, no one except the people who run Craigslist really knows what determines which ad gets ghosted. I've ran ads, that got ghosted, then reposted the exact same ad and it showed and it sold the vehicle that was for sale. Then I got the idea to post the ad that I described earlier that points people to the ghosted ad and still sold what ever I was selling. It's weird how they do that and why, but they do it and they don't discriminate.Refuse to Lose!!!
