Am I being paraniod?

Recommended Posts

So I just got a knock on my door (literally 30 sec ago) and it was a couple of hispanic guys with what appeared to be some rolling lugage. Naturally I grabed the GLOCK .40 (because I'm not expecting anyone and have zero "friends" in the local area) and held it behind my back as I unlocked and opened the door. One of the guys hands me a small piece of paper (looked to be printed on a larger piece then cut to make these "cards") that was ENTIRELY in spanish. He tells me (in very broken english) that he's selling energy drinks or some such shit. Anywho, I told them "no, I already take N.O.-XPLODE" and they left.

Here's where I'm thinking possible paranioa; Is it possible that these guys are "casing" places to hit during the hollidays? Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but my counter terrorism training makes shit like this scare the hell out of me.

Just because you're paranoid does not mean they're not following you...

Ok, seriously, yes they could be. Call your local department and report the SPO. They may be able to put their hands on them and see if they're known burglars or thieves.

Or depending on what happens, they might get hooked for dope or something that will help keep them "occupied" during the holidays.

Not that long ago, there were a bunch of houses being broken in to all over town. They had finally caught some people. What they were doing was, they would knock on the door a few times to see if anyone was home and after so many attempts with nobody answering, they would try to kick in the door.

That's one good thing about burglars in the U.S. They are scared to death of getting shot. That's why they make sure no one's home. :S

So, I should have looked through the peephole, grabbed the 12 gu and waited?

Seriously though, these guys didn't look like anything I couldn't handle after opening my door so I gave them the benefit of the doubt.

Thanks Dave. So do you call 911 or is there a local station that you call? This is my first time experiencing this sort of behavior outside of the AOR (and we just radio'ed the cops there).

Call the non-emergency number. Leave 911 open for the people calling in on their kids that won't go to school and people who need a ride to the ER because they have the flu.

Ok, seriously, check the department's website for the non-emergency number and call it in. You may not hear anything from it, they may not find them, but they'll at least be in the area checking (which can run turds off).

See that's another concern. These people (provided they are actually here for this reason) could just kick in my door while I'm at work tommorrow and make off with a shitload of stuff.... including my guns (though I doubt they would find all of them).

Yeah most likely they dont want any actual trouble. So if you do open the door, they give you some bull shit story and then move on to the next house. Just call your local police station and report suspicious activity and give them a description of the people involved.

SAFE.... bolt it to the wall and to the floor in a clost and stick all the goodies that are easily removed as well as any paperwork.

I have a big firesafe and all the important papers are in a smaller fire safe inside the big safe.

That is why, contrary to Lifetime movies, burglars typically strike during the work week, while people are at work. They knock on doors and have some sort of BS story to see if someone is home.

The number of home invasion burglaries are much more rare, although they do happen.

To others reading this, let me explain how the home security system stuff works. Contrary to the Lifetime movie style commercials, response is not only not immediate, it typically goes through at least 4 layers before a single officer is dispatched.

1. The alarm is tripped. That may take 30 seconds (time for the home owner to disable the alarm).
2. The alarm goes goes off and sends a signal to a monitoring company.
3. The monitoring company attempts to contact a key-holder on the approved list (which may include calling 3-4 people) to verify that the alarm is valid.
4. The monitoring company, after calling through the key-holder list, then hangs up with the key holders and calls the local PD dispatch.
5. The local PD dispatch creates a call with all the important information.
6. Dispatch dispatches an officer, if one is available. If there are higher priority calls, then it may be a while.
7. The dispatched officer drives across town to the address of the alarm. This is not typically a code response, which means no lights, no siren and having to drive through traffic including stopping at stop lights, etc. The officer then gets out and tries to find any signs of entry or similar. (So that cop you see driving fast with no lights and siren, he may be going to an alarm call).

This takes as little as 5 minutes, but typically from the time the alarm goes off to the officer arriving you're looking at 10 minutes, maybe more.

Take the time to make a list of all your valuable stuff, even the stuff only worth $100 or less, note the serial numbers, make and model. Engrave your name on it, or your driver's license number (and state). Make a couple of lists and keep them separate (and not just on your computer, since that might be stolen). Then the stolen items can be entered into TCIC/NCIC, which is how burglars are caught (found with known and verified stolen items)!

Problem is I cant put a safe in my appt. One big enough to accomodate all my "toys" would be too heavy (I live on the 3rd floor). Thats why I keep all my important paperwork (to inlude all reciepts of all my guns) and solid investment assets in a safe deposit box.

DUUUUDE they are not that heavy. I know they build apt building cheep.... but sheet man.

Get a smaller one.. and put it in one closet..

Once that one is filled up... get another one for another closet.
Depends on how you stash the guns in there. Think of sardines....:D:D

The peace of mind is worth it.:)

Not everyone can build a panic room;)

Right, the middle class and lower class have been limited and life and have had to panic in any room they have. Only the elites in our society can afford to have a special room for panicking.
