Triathalon 160

Recommended Posts

I'm a student jumper with 20 jumps, 6ft and 160 lbs. I found a rig for sale -- a Triathlon 160. The seller is telling me it's good for a first-time jumper that he started using it at 35 jumps.

Question is: I went to the Aerodyne web site and found "NS" for students. But when I calculate the wing loading, it comes out to about 1. Is this out of my league?

Thanks in advance for your opinion.

Ask your instructors! They know you and know how you fly.

Your wingload would be closer to 1.2 (adding 30 lbs for gear) which is not low for a newbie. You may or may not be alright on it, let your instructor make that call. Whatever you do don't go straight from bigger student canopies to this one, downsize slowly and maybe you'll not even WANT to go that small.

You are gonna hear this alot...Ask your instructors.

They are the only people (and some coaches) that have seen you jump/land and know your skills.

Having said that, I got my room mate a Tri 160 years ago and she still says it was the easiest thing she's ever landed.

So, check at your DZ for their opinion. If you don't get it, PM me...I might grab another rig. :D

All of the above. And, my fiance started on a Tri 160. She weighs 120lbs. Not knowing you I would easily say that this is too small for you. That's the easy answer. It would take alot to convince me you ready for it. Think 210 or 190. If your good.

You asked.;)

Ok i will help you out here.

you way 160lbs and a 175 reserve is in that? good.

160 tri is very good for you, it will give you good drive into the winds penatration and you landing it will be no problem.

you can also hold and make it back from long spots with the wind.

I have a 175 tri with my jump # and ill tell you why. I have been dropped all over the place and i want to stay up longer to make it back, plus i love to fly.

I jumped the 160 alot and jumped the tri 135 also.

i am 195 now i dont like the speed of the 135.

plus this 175 opens so sweet and slow better then the 160 so thats it for me.

now are you jumping a 220 tri right now?? or what??

the tri flys the same from 220 to 160 the 160 is faster of course but you get better speed and will alow you to get a better crisper flare. you need enough weight to drive the canopy and i think you to light for a 220.

i think you should buy the 160 now and jump it at 25 to 30 jumps. rent a 190 and a 175 tri and see.

now its turns faster, and is more responcive, you have!!!!!!!! to finish your flair to your finger nails on no wind days.

Do ont hook turn it or get stupid with it no low turns and practicve flat half breaked turns.

if you have a kind of windy day you will not notice much but if you jump it on a no wind day you may run or slide.

do a good half flare about 12-15 feet like pow hard to half way to level out and stop your decent and then bleed the rest of the flare till the end. do it flowingly just dont flare all the way hard at 12 feet or you will go up and slam.

so a quick initial flare then bleed it out quickly and put your foot on the ground when your hands are stretched way out in the flare down and out full extention. most dont finish there flare. and if you flare to late flare all the way hard and pick up your feet to slide.

but try it on a bit of wind in the day.

oh yeah most of these guys will give you great advice obviously ask your instructor and some of the high jumpers also.

but some of these guys are the biggest Hypocrites around.

i know them they say no camera on your head till 500 jumps when the had one on their head at 50 jumps.

dont down size to fast and at 100 jumps they are jumping 120 visions ect..

they remind me of cave divers in the scuba world, they think only they can do what they do.

but also most will give you the best advice also!

but never swoop a tri its a 7 cell recovers too fast which is great but forces someone to try a low low hook turn so thats bad. its safe to try to swoop a 110 stileto then a 160 tri.

so fly easy but ill tell you in the wind and turbulance bumping around the tri is very stable.

The 175 helped me out this weekend. i and several others landed way off from the dz due to a bad gps read. and non of us idiots bothered to spot, we though tthe first guy did a good spot. so me and the 175 flew a good ways and landed in a nice place. my buddy with 75 jumps on a 160 landed with me as did others. i love light wing loading. and yes i wil remember to spot my self even if i am filming two nuts doing the horney gorrilla.

The Tri is a good choice for a first canopy and there are a lot of good deals on them. If the lineset is in need of replacement you may have funky openings and the canopy may not flare well so consider the cost of a new lineset, if needed, in your deal. As for wingloading the only way it can be judged is by your instructors and other qualified people at your DZ. Start slow, it's easy to get ahead of yourself on canopy sizing. You'll be close to 1.2 w/l which is really quite high for your jump numbers. Be conservative, stay healthy.

what advice? not to swoop or even try to swoop a 7 cell tri??

i see guys doing it all the time low hard riser and front riser close to the ground. i dont know why they do.

the new guys seee the swoopers and think they can do the same thing. it is very dangerous to try to swoop a low loaded canopy especially a tri. my point is a high wing loaded canaopy which does not appear safe is actually safer to try to swoop ( not that he would ) due to the hight and longer recovery of the canopy.

these new guys think that their big canopy is safer so they think they can ty a little swoop. dangerous.

so whats the foolish advice?? or did you miss understood what i said

Learn from the mistakes of others, you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.

PD doesn't make that one in a 110.

I don't know your ability under canopy, and I don't know the altitude of your DZ. I also have relatively few jumps and wouldn't normally comment of anything in this forum, but I notice many similarities with my canopy progression and you may find my 'advice' helpful. I am not an instructor, and as you've never met me I may be an absolute idiot.

I'm a similar height and weight to you and jump at a DZ at 300 feet above sea level, and the British weather isn't normally very warm. At 35 jumps I bought my first rig it a sabre 170 loaded at 1.1:1. I had about 10 jumps on a 190 before that to help me downsize. I found a loading of 1.1 at sea level and with air temps normally below 15 celcius to be plenty fast enough for learning to fly (particularly to land) a canopy. Higher altitude and hotter air will make the canopy fly even faster. I know 9 cells and 7 cells fly differently, but this is my experience.

I've made a few bad mistakes (don't we all as we learn) under that canopy which I got away with, but I'm pretty certain that at 1.2:1 I wouldn't have.

After seeking advice from my instructors I've now started to put a few jumps on a sabre2 150 (1.2:1) and the landing speed is (feels) much faster. If i'd been jumping at 1.2:1 from the start I think I'd have been relying on luck a lot (and luck comes in two varieties).

I've never seen you jump, and your instuctors will give you far better and more relevant advice than me, but I'd recommend you put 60 / 80 / 100+ jumps on a canopy at 1.1:1 or lower before going to this canopy. You can make all the mistakes on a 175 that you can on a 160; it's just they normally hurt less and you stand more chance of jumping again rather than being a statistic.

Just my experience. :)

hey justin dont be a smart ass
ok 107 stileto you dumb ass
and stop mascurading as a 20 jumper and i want to see you hit the peas and see how you land

how about answering the poor guys question instead of grading my grammer and twisting what i am saying.
your the troll and you stink. all that effort just to play with my wording instead of helping the guy out. people like you want to be asses and hide behind sarcasm instead of giving personal advice.

yeah when i get advice on here its great but when i get shit from some smart ass its not great so i didnt make any hypicritical statemnet

yes i have seen guys say no camera on your head till this number jumps ect.. the old do as i say not as i do. i suspect your one of those guys. rather hand out lip service then advice.

i landed my tri in a back front yard between two trees and ran out into some dirt. everyone esle followed my lead in and landed. Now it took skill for me to do that but also I choose to jump the 175 tri. for that reason.
and yes i didnt spot that load but i should always look.

Sorry maestropaolo this is what i mean some guys will tell you what they think and some will give you crap.

Now others are saying ask your people ( instructors ect.. )at the dz, but that doesnt work all the time. some dz's abbandon the student right out of aff and some of the clciky jumpers dont even talk to you. now that hasnt happend with me but i read and here of plenty of it.

i have seen the last 7-8 students i flimed aff start with 220 or 190, tri. they land ok but the lighter guys in your weight class as soon as they land a 160 or 175 they land it better. so i asked some time ago i said why? that guy has 25 jumps he was landing terrible under the 220 and hes nailing the 175. i got the explaination and it seems to be true.

one important thing, the tri spectre c7 cells are very docile, the same size like 160 in a diablo or something else is really different. i jumped the 188 pilot and boy is that touchy for a 188, plus its a 9 cell i flaired it differently then my 7 cell. the sabre-2 was i nice canopy, i liked the 175 monarch but a lot of people say they have a bad rap, i jumped a small tri, a stiletto, vision, diablo, a 120 something jedi.

i went from 220 tri, 230 naviagtor, pd 210, tri 190, tri 175, monarch 175, tri 160, tri 135, tri 120 ect.. then the others mixed in. these were the rentals over the 2 years or so. i bought the 175tri in oct, bought a 175 swift from dz.com and got measured for a wings to fit.

now i am no canopy expert but i have ran the tris up and down and love the 175 and weigh 190 about.

but give us some more info are you sticking your landing??? what is the dz altitude ect...

hey aber_os

did you start aff with 9 cells?? and have you mostly flown 9 cells???

i have all mine but a hand ful on 7 cells

i wonder if a 9 cell is better for a student our dz has two new student rigs with slippery 9 cells the student aerodyne

and did you keep the same rig for your whole aff or did you have to get what ever rig was available??? a different rig each time

i jumped the same rig for 35 jumps 220 tri. they had to take it away from me my security blanket before i flew the 190.

funny how it works out diiferently for others

Watch it.

I have 23 jumps, and all landings have been safe. The peas are a little close the hangar for me to land in them safely with my jump #'s, not that it matters in this conversation.

The only answer I'm prepared to give is "Ask your instructor", and that's been said many times.

your the troll and you stink.

Once again, watch it.

Nothing you said would help him out. Nothing I could say would either, so I chose to say nothing.

I wasn't trying to be a smart ass. Deal with it.

I'm not, and I don't give advice to people I'm not qualified to give it to, which at this point is pretty much everybody. I wish you would do the same.

Now others are saying ask your people ( instructors ect.. )at the dz, but that doesnt work all the time.

If it doesn't work, you need to reconsider your choice of DZs.

See my statement above.

My landing's haven't been that great, but then again I'm not giving canopy advice like you are.

Ok if your not qualified to give advice fine speak for your self.

i will give only advice of my experience and what I have jumped. i own a 175 tri wings cont a hwakey cam helmet and a sony hc40 flying a .5 lens. i have almost 300 jumps and rounds in the military and squares also ( freefall ) 120 total military jumps

i also have 3 housr of tunnel time. so anything that falls under my experince i can comment on. i cant speak for 9 cells canopy.

so my question is why are you comenting at all?

And no i will not watch anything either. I am to old and big for that.

the only thing i am watching is you make a fool out yourself as a troll. now maybe you should do more reading and if a thread happens to have some relavence for you to comment by all means .

not everyone can switch dz's either sometimes thats the only place in the state.

my landings are perfect by the way and have been for a long time and i land on a very small dz so again i can talk canopy specifically i can talk triathalons. landing them, packing them, flying them, landing on the beach with them and once having line dump with one of them.

so i have over 250 hunderd triathalon jumps,

again you need to just deal with it with 29 jumps you have many decisions to make and alot to learn and you will be deciding a canopy in the next 30 jumps or so. with a rig and downsizing and all that.

so again only comment when your going to help someone out, and only comment when you have something to add or something thats relavent. playing little troll games wont get you answers when its your turn to ask questions.

dont worry you will be landing better in about 20 jumps then you will say wow that is so easy why was it hard.

again i dont think you can act like an ass here unless you have at least 500 jumps. your 471 jumps ahead of your self

You don't have to be Guy Manos to know that a newbie jumper under a 1.2 load is a bad idea.

I jumped a Tri 160 off of student status, I weighed 15-20lbs less than this guy at the time, and I think it'd be a bad idea for him to jump that 160.
