sandi 0 #1 December 9, 2010 So I've been writing and writing. Now it's three months and 80 pages later and I'm done. Passed my oral exam this morning so I am officially a doctoral candidate instead of a lowly doctoral student! In reality it really just means there is another piece of paper in my file. But it was a ton of work so I'm very happy to cross qualifying exams off the list. Now I just have to write my dissertation.
TiaDanger 0 #2 December 9, 2010 Congrats!! Good luck on writing! I'm a grad student too (masters), but I have several PhD students in my lab who are studying for comps right now, and they look so worn down and defeated! No comps for me, but I still have results and discussion left to write for my thesis, when is the madness over?! Have you ever seen the Grad School Barbie spoof? If not, google it, it is HILARIOUS and oh so true And for the record: the appropriate ranking of cool modes of transportation is jet pack, hover board, transporter, Batmobile, and THEN giant ant. sandi 0 #3 December 9, 2010 I know that worn down and defeated look very well. That's how I've looked for the past month or so. Yeah, I've seen the barbie spoof. Completely true!
Icon134 0 #4 December 9, 2010 Congrats on passing your Quals... for those in grad school if you haven't seen it before I highly recommend the comic strip PHD (as in piled higher and deeper) I really enjoyed it while I was in school... I highly recommend it... http://www.phdcomics.com/Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...

A lot of flashing lights and waving of glowing sabers, but in the end you end up with something dark and wrinkely. DPH# "-13" TSK# "-13"
kunosoura 0 #6 December 9, 2010 Nice work and congrats! I know how good that feels. Ugh it was miserable studying for those exams. I just successfully defended my dissertation Tuesday. The time really flies between quals and defense.

GeorgiaDon 379 #8 December 10, 2010 Congratulations! It does get better after this hurdle is passed. For a while. I think I get as nervous when my students are up for their oral and written prelims as I was for my own. And here's something worth knowing: faculty hate the process as much as the students do. Don't you have to do a few years worth of experiments before writing the dissertation? Don_____________________________________ Tolerance is the cost we must pay for our adventure in liberty. Unstable 9 #9 December 10, 2010 Congratulations!!! I Had to do a qualifier for my lowly MS in Engineering, and it was just a HUUUGE relief to be done. Good luck on the Thesis! What is your research in?=========Shaun ==========

And here's something worth knowing: faculty hate the process as much as the students do. At least it's unpleasant for the faculty too. QuoteDon't you have to do a few years worth of experiments before writing the dissertation? I actually took my qualifying exams late in my program because I was so busy with my research. I already have several experiments completed that will go into my dissertation (some already published). And I'm running a few now that are almost done. So, my committee members all agree that I have more than enough for my thesis. I could graduate this summer but I will probably go ahead and stay another year, there are some things I still want to learn before I go off on my own. I'm planning on going on the job market next fall so I will (hopefully) have a job to start the following fall.
