Need geek help - Exchange server redirect using MX in event of system downtime

Recommended Posts

Ok I've got myself into a real toungetwister here and need a suggestion as I can't be the only one trying to figure this out...

Here's the scenario:

Domain and email is hosted by XYZ company. Website MUST stay with current provider. Email solution they offer sucks need to move away from them

We run a SBS 2008 with exchange 2007 using a pop3 connector to download said email from host

Reason we use pop3 connector is in the event the server goes down be that due to a hurricane or mechanical problems all emails can still be accessed through the domain provider

Problem... The domain provider SUCKS, they're servers are spaming the accounts and causing problems, we use postini to filter emails however the emails (10,000 this morning) are infecting the providers server directly and no trace of postini header. MX records all point to postini only...

What I'd like to resolve...

I want to change the MX records to direct to Barracuda (sorry google) then directly to our exchange server and get away from the pop3 connector. However I need a backup plan, in the event the server goes down, I need the emails to direct to another service AND the employees need to be able to access their emails from that service. I've found exchange holding patterns and services that will hold the emails until the service comes back up, but I need a different approach.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction? I'm at a loss... I'd much rather just change hosts however we can't, I can only change the MX records to direct to new mail servers

What it sounds like is that right now your mail is being directed to the server for the web domain. Then you are poping the mail off that server for it to be on exchange and prior to that, your mail should be going through postini.

You don't have to change spam filtering providers if you don't want to. That's not where the problem is most likely. If there is nothing in any of your domain setup indication a mail host A record at your web provider, or any sort of MX record for your mail provider, then the only way that they are sending mail there is by guessing or infering that you us that mail host because your web is hosted there.

Why aren't you directing mail directly from postini to your exchange? Postini will spool your mail for awhile if your server goes down, but you have to set it up that way.

It's not a long term solution though. You can also purchase backup MX services and then put them in your mail server priority after the postini.

10 MX 1.postini.com
20 MX 2.postini.com
30 MX mail.backup.com
40 MX mail2.backup.com

Those are just examples. Incoming mail _should_ obey those rules, but spammers don't. If they pickup the backup server and send mail to it directly then the mail from the backup server also then has to go through the postini, which shouldn't ever go down, which then means that you're back to postini hosting your temporary backup.

I read somewhere that postini can spool up to 1GB of mail for you, dunno how long it would take your organization to generate that much mail. You may already have the solution you are looking for and a few simple configuration changes can solve the problem. You should look more into that. I mean, you're not going to be able to access it from the postini spool, but if your mail server is totally dead, you have bigger problems.

It's literally exactly what you're asking for. (From postini)
