1969912 0 #1 November 25, 2010 Watch the video on the link below. At first it looks like they are just falling with a little fwd speed from the exit launch, but later views look like they are actually tracking. Maybe they can distort their cross-section into a stubby airfoil? It would be cool to see even longer flights. http://www.aolnews.com/weird-news/article/pentagon-wants-secret-of-flying-snakes/19732183?test=latestnews "Once we got to the point where twenty/something's needed a place on the corner that changed the oil in their cars we were doomed . . ." -NickDG
matthewcline 0 #2 November 25, 2010 It's Atmo! Seriously though, it does look like they flatten out their bodies in the longer shots. I guess it is kind of a version of what we do with tracking. JohnMitchell 16 #13 November 26, 2010 Interesting. A few things I noticed. Of course, we understand that from a no-wind start, you have to fall a while to build up flying speed. The one scientist watching the video talked about how at first, the snake looked like it was just falling. I thought they'd not be surprised by that. I noticed the snakes turn the main part of their body sideways to the relative wind. This gives them a high aspect ratio wing, therefore a more efficient glide. Very nice. From a 50 ft platform the snakes flew up to 80 feet. Allowing for 10 feet or so to build up flying speed, and from watching the video, I estimate their glide ratio at about 2 to 1. In the article, they spoke of snakes flying 800 feet. That must have been going down a slope, because I don't think there are too many (any) 400 foot trees in the world. It's nice to see some videos showing scientific research and posing questions to the audience. However, I hated the voice over talking about how the snakes "defy gravity." They fly using well established scientific principles. There is no mysterious defiance of anything. I hate it when mysticism is paraded as science, and vice versa, and sensationalism is used to sell science. >>>>
