Most Web Cam Blow . . . Not this One!

Recommended Posts

I don't know why but this web cam fascinates me. It's the cross walk in London made famous on The Beatles' Abby Road album cover.

It seems every few minutes you'll see someone posing like the boys did as they walk across and have their photo taken. And the drivers seem very courteous about stopping for people. I keep waiting for a Harley to ride by but so far all I've seen are sport bikes and scooters, but it does seem that lane splitting is legal as I've seen that more than a few times. I guess someone here would know for sure . . .

I thought I heard once that where the Abbey Road crossing is "now" isn't where it was when that famous photo turned album cover was taken?

Probably part of the whole "Paul is Dead" conspiracy.

Anyway, what's up with the crooked lines on the roads in the UK anyways? Where's N@t when you need her!! :P

Doh! I guess that makes sense. I had assumed that the lines on the sides of the road were crooked everywhere in the UK. :$

Anyway, did you notice the grafitti fans leave on the white pillar / gate entrnace, at the bottom right of the webcam field of view? If you click through the stills at the bottom, it changes. I wonder how frequently they repaint?

It'd be interesting to count the paint layers if they ever decide to sandblast it all off and start over!

... The cover photo for that album was taken by Iain Macmillan outside Abbey Road Studios, with the result that the pedestrian zebra crossing outside the studio, where the Fab Four were photographed soon became a place of pilgrimage for Beatles fans from all over the world. The crossing is no longer in the same location as it was in 1969, having been moved further east in the 1970s. Looking across the street in the direction the Beatles crossed it, the crossing was moved from the left side of the Belisha beacon on the destination side of the street (the side John Lennon is closest to) to the right side of the beacon. It has been a long-standing tradition for visitors to pay homage to the band by writing on the studio fence in front, although it is painted over monthly...

Yep, 'filtering' or lane splitting is legal in the UK - one of the reasons I didn't bring my bike out here when I moved to the states... [:/] Didn't fancy being stuck in a line with all the cars on my daily commute, without the luxury of aircon and music on 100 degree days...

Just don't forget while traveling, we are the ONLY state where it is "legal" but , that has never stopped me!B|

Don't think it would stop me either... and that's another reason I didn't bring my bike - being a guest in this country I figured that breaking laws probably wouldn't be a good idea... ;)

There's kind of an interesting reason why it's legal here in California and not in almost any other state.

It's due to the fact that California Highway Patrol motor officers (the ones who patrol on motorcycles) want to lane split themselves but they know it's safer for them to do so if all motorcyclists are also allowed to do it. That way the people in automobiles are used to seeing it, they tend to expect it, and they don't get all freaked out by it.

And yes, for those of us used to it, it's hard not do it in a state where it isn't allowed.

Lane sharing isn't specifically legal, it's just not illegal and can be up to the discretion of the officer. Many officers have made up rules regarding lane sharing but most of the time, if you're not sharing lanes like an asshole, you'll be fine. I've had the CHP move left to allow me by easier.

I think a few other states are ok with lane sharing but I'm uncertain since I'm in California.

BTW, I like the webcam.

Having said it's legal in the UK... if you get involved in an accident while doing it, it becomes a bit of a grEy :P area. In my one and only bike accident I got side swiped by someone, and although it was clearly the car driver's fault (and I had witnesses saying so) it still came out 70/30 - in my favour - in the settlement...

@Nick: good reasoning - it's another reason I didn't bring my bike (they are building up ;)); not confident in driver awareness over here when it comes to bikes...

Well, who can argue that ? :ph34r:B| If you exceeded the speed of the cars by more than 15 MPH, that ticket can stick...

BTW, contact me some time, I'll buy ya a beer here in El Cajon..

Yes, that's the rub, you have to do it safely. I've never had trouble with that because as much as I do it, it stills scares the holy crap out of me. Kind of like B.A.S.E. jumping!

It amazes me how you see the "hunters" take aim in their rear view, and know they are going to move...

Them, I handle, the ones that scare me, are looking no where... Or have a phone nailed to their ear, they may move any second

That's a great place for a webcam - really nice quality feed, too! But if tourists were to watch it for a few minutes they'd realise how cliched their behaviour is - it's almost as if the footage is on a loop :)
That Abbey Road Zebra crossing has got to be the worst in London for drivers, but I guess they're used to it. Zebras usually work fairly well, but since the law says you have to stop your car if people are waiting to cross, it's very annoying if people are loitering near the crossing. At this one they do it all day long!

Regarding the zig-zag lines, they mark an area each side of the crossing where you can't park, and you can't overtake, for obvious reasons.
