One of the best rescue chopper pilots in the USAF once told me he did not actually fly the thing.. he TRIED really hard to maintain it in a controlled state of crash at all times. Most of the time... many of the chopper drivers are pretty good at that.. sometimes.. not so much It looked like the swell unloaded the weight of the aircraft from the flight deck... lucky sum o a beotch

I'd like to know what that "accident just waiting to happen" net under the chopper was doing there?

After the aircraft had cleared the deck they were going to unfold it to lay out the worst Zone Acc course known to man? mrubin 0 #5 November 5, 2010 I'd say that the guy on the deck is pretty damn lucky. That tail rotor came really close to hitting him. Probably needed to change his underwear after that one."I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery

You can see the tail rotor strike very clearly at 1:03. Then it makes 3/4 of a rotation before the pilot can set it down. Watch how low the deckhand gets at 1:10.You can also see that the tail rotor has completely stopped while the main rotor is still spooling down. That was a fairly expensive little flight."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Beerlight 0 #8 November 6, 2010 evidently they don't know what a rotor brake is used for.....
BobMoore 0 #9 November 8, 2010 QuoteI'd like to know what that "accident just waiting to happen" net under the chopper was doing there? I assume that net is there to increase the friction on the deck. Without it the helicopter would be sliding all over the place as the ship rolls on the waves."For you see, an airplane is an airplane. There appears to be a big chunk of tail rotor missing after impact, he is lucky that piece missed him too!

Calvin19 0 #13 November 8, 2010 that's ancient. and I am pretty sure that was a crash. pretty massive internal repairs needed after a ATR strike.
