Rip off (car manufacturers)

Recommended Posts

This morning, Started the car drove off went to change to second and the
gear stick went all floppy, a cable link snapped, after muttering few expletives
I jacked up the car and started to remove the cable which was no easy task,
drop the exhaust as the cat heat shield blocked access to the nuts holding the
gear stick housing, fabricate a tool to remove a circlip that was nearly impossible
to access, four hours latter I have the cable in my hand.

Phoned the dealer to order a new one and he asked If I had a plastic or leather gear knob,
whats that got to do with it I said I need the cable, I'm shure you do he said, with a cash register
jingle tone of voice, you can't buy just the cable you have to buy the complete assembly
gear stick and knob included, a steal at just €350.00 + taxes

A less than 5 euro cable jacked up to 350 +

call around to your local motorcycle repair shops, I had a new cable made on my chevy by taking the housing and ends of the cable, if they have a swager and a spool of cable its an easy fix, cant recall what it cost but since I was really poor at the time I am pretty sure it was less than 50$ - of course this assumes you have swaged ends... good luck

Roy

edit: you may also be able to purchase the swager and cable from a hardware store
They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.

Someone who makes ripcords can usually swage ends. Also, I used a set screw to create a swaged end on a cable for my accelerator once. Of course, that didn't last long because it wasn't smooth enough, and the accelerator kept sticking :o, but I made it home.

Tomorrow I'll have more time and look into seeing if it's viable to reuse the the cable ends.
I have some stainless steel braided cable that is about the same size. the cable is crimped in a steel tube
that I'll have to drill out in the lathe, one problem is I don't have a Hydraulic crimper.

BFH: right tool for the job!

Ya know, depending on your surroundings, a hydraulic floor jack can be set in a manner that makes it a huge press.

If it won't go, force it.
If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.

Duct tape and WD-40.

If it moves and it shouldn't, duct tape.

If it doesn't move and it should, WD-40.

The rest is just fancy shit.

Yeah, like those tire bolts I snapped off trying to force the tire iron to turn the nuts by standing on it?

Little fuckers were like $12 each. >:(:D

You have bolt on tires????

How old is your car???

:D:D:D

anti-seize compound was made for some good reasons.
this is one of them.
;)

:D I dunno why the T-bolts in question got stuck. I suspect the shop over-torqued them when doing the tire rotations or something. I needed to take the tire off so I could pull out some fucking nail and plug it and the nuts wouldn't budge.

Didn't know there was anti-seize stuff. What's it called?
