quade 4 #7 September 23, 2010 Quotea map or Atlas anymore? Just seems like it is a dead source of data. All data is drifting toward 1s and 0s. However, maps printed on paper, just as books, will still be with us for awhile. That said, the amount of data and the speed of distribution via GIS applications is very much a growing field.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Bolas 5 #11 September 23, 2010 I used one this past weekend. GPS's are great to get you places, not so much if you want to take a scenic or fun route along certain roads like The Dragon. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

JohnRich 4 #13 September 23, 2010 If you get away from electricity, like while hiking or canoeing, you need a paper map. Batteries run out. If you need real detail, like the locations of old mines or cemeteries, the only thing that you can take into the field with you that you can count on is paper. I love the USGS 1:24k topo maps. And those Delorme state atlas books. Attached: a map from northeast Minnesoota where I'll be lake-hopping by canoe next week.
JohnMitchell 16 #14 September 23, 2010 I like using maps, to get a good overview of where I'm going, and to see what's around and nearby. When I began my career in ATC, I only half jokingly said that I memorized maps for a living. Any controller can tell you the meaning of "Know the Map." With that said, the maps I use these days are mostly electronic. Very rarely do I hold the paper in my hands.
Squeak 17 #15 September 23, 2010 Quote No. Just a curios old man. I love maps, i use them when ever i can, just bought a national map book to travel coast to coast at Xmnas time, plan days milage and side trips with them, GPS takes all the fun out. But for inner city driving a GPS is GOLDYou are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! How's yours doing? Welles 0 #17 September 23, 2010 I do. I have a U.S. atlas in my car-good for the big picture -and a GPS- which until recently had crapped out- I think because I spilled a drink on my dash and blew the fuse in the cigarette lighter/charger. And I just picked up a map of bike trails yesterday. Again and Again....face to face with the sky - RMR

Funny thing about it was, the stealership swore up and down it wasn't compatible and it wouldn't work (I have an 03, the nav unit was from an 05)... I finally convinced them to spend the 5 mins with their tech-2 to remove the theftlock (only after paying in advance, with a no refund policy) I got the key back and walked out to it, what do ya know, it works. In their defense, it wasn't even an option until 04-05, so they just didn't know any better."I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message

nigel99 568 #21 September 23, 2010 Quotea map or Atlas anymore? Just seems like it is a dead source of data. Yes quite frequently but not for driving, I prefer to keep my eyes on the road and let the GPS take me to where I am going (even if it is not the ideal route). But I use maps for radio sighting surveys and being printed and spread out on a desk makes them a hell of lot easier to use than a PC. Also have started taking the boys camping and we don't use GPS when walking but a map and compass.Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. skymama 37 #23 September 23, 2010 I don't have a GPS, although it's been suggested I need one. I always download a map and directions from the internet when I go places. If I'm going across state lines, I go to AAA and get a real map for each state that I'll be in. Remember the old Tripticks they used to have? OlympiaStoica 0 #25 September 23, 2010 The navigation system in my car rendered the us of a map absolete. With GPS so prevalent on our iPhones, Blackberries, etc, I doubt people still use paper maps. Got to move forward O
