Top 3 off-beat things to do in LA

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be there next week for a conference (which will take up most of the week). However, I'm staying until mid-Monday, and not bringing my gear :o. It's time to do something else.

There'll be hiking, of course (I love hiking), and a museum or two. But I'm looking for the stuff that everyone says is cool, but that isn't tops on the list when you look at Google for ideas. I hear the county fair is that weekend for instance -- is that worth going to?

No, I'm not going to Disney :P, but if Knotts Berry Farm is awesome I suppose it could be included (I love roller coasters, but hate crowds -- that'd have to be on Friday).

So -- thoughts?

Not particularly off-beat, but a great "LA Experience" (IMHO) is to have breakfast here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/back-on-the-beach-santa-monica. Casual little place with chairs right in the sand, decent food, and spectacular views.

After that, you can wander around Santa Monica and head down to Venice (which is definitely marching to its own beat!).

We took the kids to Universal Studios and then Magic Mountain up North.

Talk a stroll thru Beverly Hill's Rodeo Drive with Weezer playing on the iPod.

Hit an In-and-Out Burger for Valinda's favorite fast food.

Drive around and marvel that you're in the epicenter of Western Pop Culture, for what it's worth.;)

Hi Wendy!
I live out in this area, if you have ANY questions, send me a message!
If you like Rollar Coasters, I'd suggest magic mountain over Knotts, hands down. Knotts is geared more towards families with smaller children, Magic Mountain has some pretty fantastic rollar coasters.
There's also Neptunes Net, which is in Malibu, on a beach called county line. It's a great surf/kiteboarding spot, I can't vouch for the food, it's a seafood fare, I am a vegetarian, but the people watching can't be beat.
Venice Beach is pretty much a must do for tourists. It's very crowded, but another great people watching place. You can't find a more eclectic group anywhere.
The Getty/Malibu has a great collection. You'll need to plan your trip there in advance, they require reservations, as the parking is very limited. It's free to enter, and I believe somewhere around 10dollars for parking.
The Griffith Observatory is another place that's worth a look see. There's plenty of hiking around the observatory, and the observatory itself is worth a couple of hours of entertainment. Last time I was there it was free. Right now it's pretty crispy, that area is very warm and smog prone, FYI.
If you're free on a Sunday the House of Blues does a Sunday Gospel Brunch. I haven't yet been, but I plan on it, and have heard it's amazing.
There's the original Farmers Market in LA, with a new add on called the Grove.
Hope you have a great trip!!!
Andrea

I don't remember exactly where it was but my wife and I did a nice hike just east of LA in the foothills that went down a valley and ended at a nice waterfall I may direct her into this thread and perhaps she can point you in the right direction...

We also checked out the Griffith Observatory...

...both were done in March.

We also stayed in a wonderful B&B in the Pasadena area on milionares row...

Huntington Library - Pasadena area
The Getty - west of Beverly Hills

Groundlings
Upright Citizens Brigade - Hollywood & just across the street from Scientology Celebrity Center, not that you could possibly go in there, but it's fun to look at their spooky assed building. On that same block is the Bourgeois Pig which is a fun artists & writer's coffee shop.

Speaking of coffee; Intelligentsia has two locations; Venice and Silver Lake.

Museum of Flying - Santa Monica airport
Typhoon - Santa Monica airport
quade -
The World's Most Boring Skydiver

For something that would take care of both the 'off-beat' & 'beat-off' dilemma...stop by the Hustler of Hollywood sex toy store on Sunset Blvd.
