I think aft-CG issues preclude flying any small tandem a/c from the rear when solo. When I was flying the Blanik L-13, the instructor always took the rear seat, but we never flew them solo from the rear. If you put someone directly under the center of lift of the aircraft (i.e. near the front of the wing) then CG is minimally affected - thus adding/removing the front passenger affects CG the least. J-3 cubs that have the standard firewall fuel tank have to be flown solo from the rear seat. (Alternatively, enough baggage can be placed in the back to provide the needed weight.) Later variants, the PA-11 and the PA-18, carry their fuel in wing tanks. This moves the empty CG far enough rearward that it can be flown solo from the front seat.
