It's a spot on movie regardless of religious belief. Show's the benefit of being truly selfless.:)

Don't feel bad. I alternated between crying my eyes out and laughing until I had tears running down my face. :$

I think it's a requirement to watch the movie! ;)

Good flick.

Somebody earlier mentioned the religious overtones. Yeah, those are intentional, but handled so much more soft peddle than the earlier Disney efforts just a few years ago to market "Christian" movies. Make no mistake, that's a big drive and part of why it's successful, but because it's done so well, it also appeals to the main stream.

Possibly the best performance Sandra Bullock has ever given doesn't hurt either.

For everyone who's raving about the movie ... go read the book. It's even better. I would like to be able to write half as well as Michael Lewis when I grow up. He's one of those writers where when I'm reading his work, I will literally stop and re-read something just because I'm so blown away by how he crafts words into art.

I liked it too. I wouldn't even classify it as a "chick flick", it's just a good movie that most people seem to enjoy.

I have no desire to watch the movie, the whole 'white savior' thing gets old, but I did enjoy the book. The book is much more football oriented (about 1/2 of it is on Oher specifically). Although in the book, the mom just grated on my nerves. The superficiality of the family is incredible, they bought Oher's way into college, etc.

Yes they did ...but unlike how MANY wealthy people do for their chldren, it didn't cost an endowment....just a full time tutor.

If this were a fictional 'feel-good' story it would have come off campy and tanked at the box office...but as my old FJI use to say~ It ain't bragging if ya really did it! B|

Not a chick flick when a hillbilly gets blocked over a 5 foot fence.....;)

I didn't notice any religious overtones in the movie. I guess that went right over my head. Or maybe it was so subtle that it just didn't stand out enough for me to focus on it.

Anyhow, I enjoyed it.

I don't think stories like that could ever get old.. for me anyway. The whole sports team integrating or the white coach that turns the team around on the other hand has been done.

You should give it a try.

Oh they're there and it's all intentional too, but yes very subtle.

A long time ago Disney was ultra-conservative, then some stuff happened in Hollywood where they, out of necessity, had to become "gay friendly." Everyone else in Hollywood was giving benefits to gay partners and Disney was the last major hold out. As a result, there was a HUGE backlash in the conservative Christian community which began pushing boycotts of Disney movies and theme parks. So, the Company countered by making Christian friendly movies; that's how the Narnia franchise got started and sold. Ever since then Disney has been able to market to both sides of the fence by producing movies and television for both markets.

When it comes to the Christian market, they've gotten very good at being subtle; making just the right kinds of stories, putting just the right code words into the scripts and doing special marketing pushes in the Christian community.

Narnia was christian? Shows how much attention I was paying

Holy geebus, yes!

Now I know you wouldn't think so just looking at it and even C. S. Lewis says it was up for interpretation, but somehow many, many years ago Christians latched on to it as a retelling of the Christ story. REALLY?!? Yeah. Goofy, I know, but that's how it's gone down in the Christian community. So when Disney was looking around for a story to appease the Christian masses, that's the one they picked and they marketed it heavily with special screenings to Christian leaders so the word would go out to the flock.

Yeah, some of my more religious family members boycotted Disney during that time. [:/]

I went and read some more about The Blind Side. Apparently Sandra Bullock turned the script down several times because she was uncomfortable playing a Christian woman. I don't recall their religion even being mentioned in the film, but perhaps it was. If it wasn't mentioned over and over (making a strong point about it), I probably wouldn't have noticed since that is fairly "normal" to me.

This was an interesting Christian review of the movie:
http://www.christiananswers.net/spotlight/movies/2009/blindside2009.html
I guess I saw all the same things in the movie that the author did - a theme of "thanksgiving" and "doing the right thing." I just don't equate those things with religion, so I wouldn't have taken them as religious overtones, even if they were meant to be.

I didnt see any mention of religion in this film :S. I think its crappy to try and promote Christianity with a movie anyway... it sort of suggests that the only type of people willing to do nice things as seen in the film would be "religious" people, when the truth is probably something more along the lines of "nice wealthy people". Im 100% atheist and cant bring myself to believe in fairy tales for adults, but I could quite easily do nice things for people in need if I was minted. Dont need to be a bible basher to be a nice person! Great film anyway, glad I didnt watch it at work or they probably wouldve sent me to see the psychiatrist.
