Who owns a Kegerator here?

Recommended Posts

Good math. But you didn't take into consideration such things as redemption values for each can or bottle. A case is 24 bottles. The bottles themselves are worth 5 to 10 cents a pop - at least - in additional costs in many cases (and you can never recover that amount). A 24 pack will cost you and additional $2.40.

Kegs, meanwhile, have the first deposit and then you just return them. My CO2 bottle lasted me over 3 years. I'm on my second right now. And, you can get cups that are way easier to clean up. The only cost in excess is electric (which is a reason why I don't use mine in the summer).

True. I also left such subtleties as the time value of money out of my cost comparison, even though the cases can be purchased one at a time, while the keg has to be purchased all at once. Thanks for catching such details. ;)

Yeah but we are talking a KEG here. DRAFT beer. In your HOME!!!!! It is almost always a few bucks cheaper to buy bottles, but man is it nice to bust out the pint glasses or 40oz mugs or Das Booooooooooooooot!!! (over 100oz)

I agree. If I were the one making the decision (and I thought I would consume a keg of Guinness in a timely manner), I would definitely go for the keg. :)

I prefer draft beer myself and I sure have a lot less recycleables to carry out to the curb every thursday morning

edited to add I guess that makes it GREEN BEER:D:D

sorry

I have one though I don't run Guinness. I built my own using a kit through Beverage Factory on line. (I think that was the name at least). Got a Free Fridge and spent approx another $100 for the kit. Works great. They might have a Guinness kit as well, I am not sure. That Magic Fridge is siure nice to have though is the garage!

Thanks for the reply(s). I did do my google diligence before posting so I have a general idea on what I need to run Guinness and only Guinness. I really don't care about running any other beer in the kegerator and at the rate I currently purchase it, which is no less than 3 cases at a time, in the long run, having a kegerator is the best option for me. Plus there is the convenience issue as I wouldn't have all the empty bottles to deal with or down time when the store doesn't have it in stock by the case.

While I may look into doing my own conversion, I'd much rather just buy one ready to go that doesn't look like a homemade job. The down side is that they are insanely expensive for some reason in comparison to ones set up for domestic beer. I may just purchase a regular one and do the Guinness upgrade as it is still cheaper than buying one ready made.

I haven't time to read the whole thread so might be repeating stuff here, but......
Attached is a photo of the one I made for my homebrew kegs - it can take up to 6 5gal kegs with room for some fermenters. It started off as a standard white chest freezer. I took the lid off, built a wooden collar, glued that to the body then reattached the lid and used appliance paint to make it cooler! That way you can drill holes for the taps, gas lines etc. without damaging the freezer (or potentially drilling thru the coils!).
For Guinness you will need N2 / CO2 mix - called beer gas. You will also need a specific stout faucet - Perlick make the best ones - its worth spending a little more for something that won't lead the precious fluid out! Also an external thermostat is a good idea to save energy and keep it at the right temp.
You can use any kind of fridge, with taps coming out the top if you wish, but again, watch for those coils!
Go to a homebrew website for more details - I use www.tasteybrew.com - those guys know their stuff and will be a great help if you decide to make your own.
Good luck!!

I called the guys at beverage factory and they were very helpful. It is possible to get a turn key kegerator set up for Guinness that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Its still more than a kegerator set up for domestic but its way less than the other turn key guinness kegerators you see on the net.

Thanks for everyones input.:)

Oh come on SCOTT!
You got us all wound up and thirsty...we're going to need more info than that.
:D:D:D

What is it you want to know?

What I found out was that you buy any of the kegerators set up for the domestic swill and also purchase the 4 other components needed to dispense the nectar of the Gods known as Guinness and you're set. Final price is more than your average kegerator price due to having to buy those 4 other components. But when all is said and done it doesn't cost anything close to the $1800- 2 grand like the turn key Guinness kegerators cost. If you drink Guinness like I do, its an easy decision to make.:D

I suspect that's kinda what I thought...
so how much?
do you get the "swill dispensing hardware" as well ?(skydivers WILL visit)

Glad you found your solution. I've wanted home dispensed Guinness for years...with the ability to tap some fine American crafts as well.;)

You get the swill hardware as part of the kegerator purchase. The price is dependent on which turnkey kegerator you purchase as they vary in price but the cost for the 4 other components needed for Guinness works out to about $280.00. So pick a kegerator of your choice/price range out, add $280 on it and you can pour Guinness all day long and you still have the ability to serve the domestic swill at a kegger party.

Well I finally broke down and picked up everything I need to have my own Vitamin G dispenser in the house. I picked up the right mix of gas needed and tapped a keg yesterday, so :DB|
