Inglourious Basterds

Recommended Posts

So, last week we (some other movie geeks and myself) were talking about District 9 and speculating that maybe there is a new aesthetic in film making where the writer and director don't feel the need to write a complete story. Where maybe the audience can just skip over the details that aren't filled in or don't make sense.

On the other hand, there are nearly perfect movies where everything makes sense and even the smallest of details included are explained and payoff. Inglourious Basterds is one of these films and by contrast is just so much more fulfilling I would strongly suggest seeing the movies close together to see the difference.

Say what you may about the violent aspects, but Tarantino puts together a nearly perfect story and absolutely perfect visuals.

Brad Pitt is great, although he may be channeling Robert Redford in places. Mélanie Laurent and Diane Kruger are simply wonderful and Christoph Waltz deserves a Best Supporting for this. This better be up for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director or I don't know anything about movies.

If you love movies, go see this in a theater as quickly as possible.

Tarantino is such a hack, I have a hard time calling him best anything. Bloody comedy is akin to fart and poop jokes, IMO. Kill Bill was enjoyable because of the wire-fu, and some nice anime cut-scenes, but I didn't see the appeal of Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. I have a hard time with Pulp beating out 4 Weddings and Quiz Show for the Oscar that year. I have to give him credit, though, he does draw some pretty good acting talent.

Pulp fiction was and is still a great movie! Pure genius on his part to not play it in sequence the way he did. Even the story line was great. The only thing I didnt like was seeing john travolta with a big belly.

I cant wait to see Inglourious Basterds.:)

Ya better skip "Hairspray" then.:P

Tarantino is an acquired taste for me. I still have a hard time calling Pulp Fiction a comedy, maybe very noir comedy. He has a great ability to recycle pop culture, and I like the way he digs up some great old music for his sound tracks.

Tarantino is such a hack.

Oh really? Tell me why you think that. Don't tell me you just don't like his films, but tell me what specifically you think about them is hack. What is he doing that virtually every other wanna be writer/director is also doing that marks him as hack?

Is it because he uses the same damn 12 point Courier and #5 ACCO brass brads to bind his scripts?

I can completely understand anybody simply not liking his work. That's fine. There are lots of writer/directors that don't float my boat because I'm not their market demo, but to call Tarantino a hack is a bit much. He absolutely and 100% knows exactly how to write the poetry of a screenplay and bring it to life visually on the screen.

Don't believe me? Watch the first "chapter" (maybe 30 minutes) of the film. It seems like a simple scene, but every moment builds. Every shot, every line, perfectly justified and executed even if you don't think so at the exact moment, you will by the end of it.

I can't think of anyone else that could have pulled off just that part alone. Certainly not a hack.

Agree 100%

There is a formula for hopeful success in Hollywood and nearly every writer & director stick to that 'proven' formula...except Tarantino, and the result is pure brilliance.

And he also has the ability to make the characters in his movie be... characters! Not demeaning Waltz' amazing performance, his part was brilliantly written. I personally consider Tarantino as as one of a handful of directors who define great film making, alongside Kubrick, Welles, and the likes...

As one of those in the generally-not-big-Tarantino-fans category, I'll echo the praise for his latest film. I was 'incentivized' to see it over the weekend. (I can appreciate and rationally comprehend his brilliance, like James Joyce's, that doesn't mean I necessarily 'like' what either produced.) It definitely doesn't spoon-feed everything (anything?) to the audience, which I like. It's also got some fabulously acerbic humor in it.

Concur that Waltz dominates, even with the strong cast throughout.

Can't hardly wait until a couple of weeks go by so we can discuss this without the spoilers. There are a couple of scenes in particular that I found interesting and worth discussing, possibly over at SC.

The Coen Brothers do a great job without making the same films as everyone else. Raising Arizona (protagonists usually don't steal babies) or Barton Fink (I'm not quite sure how you'd classify that) are great departures from mainstream. The rest of their oeuvre is excellent too but fits more in with accepted formulas.

David Lynch's flawed protagonists and darkness in every day life are another welcome detour off the beaten path . Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart would be my favorites; Lost Highway is still good but Lynch seems to have become too self-indulgent to do a decent job editing.

Randomly, I saw District 9 last week and Inglourious Basterds last night. quade's definitely right about being able to make the comparison, especially with some shared do good/do bad/redemption themes.

I had very high expectations for Inglourious Basterds and was absolutely not let down. Mostly, I try to have moderate to low expectations for movies (I end up being pleasantly surprised, not disappointed), but feel totally comfortable expecting stellar direction and script from Tarantino.

Totally worth seeing even if you're not necessarily a Tarantino fan (but then I think all his movies stand alone).

I suggest if you want to call Quentin Tarantino a hack with no skills, you first become a better director than he is.

Disclaimer: I like Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, never seen either Kill Bill and think that Mexican-werewolf thingie was reedickulous!

I would like to see Tarantino make another type of film.

I mean, I get him but I do not always like him--not even often.

I would like to see his spin on Steel Magnolias. I.e. something without all the Hollywood special-effects and action scenes--just pure storytelling.

I would argue that 50% of Inglourious Basterds is exactly what you've asked for. It's really two movies with one central character that ties them together.

And for cryin out loud don't read any critics' reviews prior to seeing it. Some give away the jaw-dropper ending to that chapter.

I haven't seen it yet, but has anyone seen the 1978 Italian war film "The Inglorious Bastards"? Apparently, it is one of QT's favorite movies, inspired his current film, and after watching it I can see why: really good dialog and an interesting set of characters. It is a really good movie, and there is video of QT interviewing the director somewhere on Youtube.

Saw it last night(and have seen District 9) and while I generally like QT's movies I didn't find this anything different than any other QT movie. I thought Brad Pitts acting/character was well done as were a few others but overall, I wasn't overly impressed with it. It's a typical, par for course, QT movie with his usual style but I expected a bit more based on the TV previews. Honestly, I'd say see an early showing and save a few bucks if you've seen a most of QTs movies already as it is predictable.

We plan to watch it tonight. Arrived Tuesday from Netflix (Netflix rocks).

I hope it is as good as expected, despite Brad Pitt. I have a weird aversion to Pitt--always have. While he is a decent actor, I can't help but think he doesn't really get half the roles he plays. Ironically for me, I cannot take him seriously.

You will hate him in this. I could not agree with your statement about his acting until watching this. Keep in mind it's Tarantino, so it's supposed to be cheesy.

I liked the movie, saw it 2 nights ago. Pitt's first scene took some getting used to but I adjusted to him as his character pretty quick. I liked the "dirty dozen on steroids" aspect, and the relationships between the characters was pretty witty and entertaining. The way they approached a hypothetical twist in WWII was pretty cool, though predicatble at times. Great dramady, definitely worth seeing. 9 outta 10 says I!
So there I was...
