BillyVance 34 #1 April 22, 2010 You better suck it up when shit happens, and... take pictures. I was running a piece of wood through the table saw last Sunday evening when the saw kicked it out violently, and hit my finger. I was guiding it through with both hands, one on the front after it was clear from the saw and one behind doing the pushing. It had a section already cut out with a portion protruding on top. The saw hit a knot in the wood and shot it out, and the protruding edge caught my little finger. Strange thing was, it didn't hurt! Suck what up? Soon as I stopped the bleeding, I headed off to the ER at the local hospital myself. It was late evening, and the place was almost deserted. Good time to go IMO. I was in and out of there in 2 hours, less than half the time of past visits. In the 2nd picture, you can see the meat that has been ripped. The flap of skin with meat still on it feels numb when I touch it, so obviously the nerve endings were severed. Six stitches in all to put it back together. It was a weird cut, U shaped, with a couple other cuts branching out from the big one. I think the doc did a hack job, but after all, it's a small hospital in a small city. Probably should have gotten one or two more stitches but it'll heal, and I'll have an interesting scar. He said to see my regular doc in 5 days to follow up, and again to take the stitches out. Fuck that bullshit. I got a tetanus shot and amoxicillin, and I'm taking the stitches out myself after 10 days. I aint paying $30 co-pays twice. The only time it has really hurt was when my 11 month old girl grabbed it while I was changing her diaper. Note to self: always give her something to play with first. jdthomas 0 #5 April 22, 2010 Ouch!! I worked a kickback impalement once, that guy had a 2x2 sticking out of his abdoman, he was walking behind the saw when it kicked back. the board missed the guy using the saw and got the guy walking.. bad luck! Not that this would have helped you but after watching the sawstop brand saw video and demo, I am sold on those saws!www.greenboxphotography.com

I sign with a lisp now. Nah, I do all my finger-spelling with the right hand and most signs that do not involve both hands. regulator 0 #21 April 22, 2010 Sorry but I don't think that this actually relates to being stupid. I use a table saw all the time and I know that shit happens ..especially with a spinning blade. Ya wanna go down the stupid road, you can use me as an example. I have a Bosch table saw and I was making a box for my weenie dogs to race...(its a wooden box we put our dogs in to simulate what they will encounter at the yearly Buda weenie dog races). Just a simple 24 in tall box...three feet long and 14 inches wide...no big deal...I cut the frame with no problem. And instead of waiting on my wife to help me I decided that I could cut a 6 foot wide piece of plywood in half. Stupid ass mistake...I got a bit more than halfway down when the blade started to bind because of the pressure of the piece hanging off...of course I could've left it at that and turned the saw off but no...I decided to see if I could get it to run through. Yeah it went full speed...and then spit the piece right back at me and slammed a corner of it directly into my balls. THAT was stupid...hitting a knot and being struck by debris should be classified as 'shit happens"
jimmytavino 16 #22 April 22, 2010 or classified as,,, 'creating the circumstances ... by which it's EASIER for shit to happen......' the person operates the tools... if you're letting a tool. operate in any way other than normal... i.e. forcing the work,, through the blade... doing a 2 person job ALONE,,,, letting too much of the work piece hang unsupported off the work bench or off the saw table..... then sorry.... but it's ON you... never wanna see such things happening.. But it akin to thinking,,, 'i'll change that closing loop next time",, or I'll fix that bad velcro,, next time,, or I'll consider replacing my worn out pilot chute,,, next time.... Billy!!!! at least you weren't working with the Bobcat Excavator,, this time... Neosporin the hell outta that bad boy.... jimmytavino
BillyVance 34 #23 April 22, 2010 Actually, for the big plywood pieces, I lay them over 2x4's on the garage floor and run my hand-held electric saw. Most of the time these pieces don't require absolute accurate cuts and I can sand off or plane off any imperfections if needed. But you're right. Shit happens. One time my dad was cutting up some wood from a hardwood tree he had cut down. He wanted to use some of the wood for a project instead of buying pre-cut wood at the supply depot. He missed catching the little rock embedded within the tree. Saw kicked that piece of wood out and gouged a hole in the CONCRETE BLOCK wall!
