murrays 0 #1 April 11, 2010 Hi, I just received a letter from a prosthodontist that I was referred to by my dentist for treatment options. One of the options is having a complete upper denture mounted on 6 dental implants. I will also require bone grafts on my upper jaw before the implants can be placed. Has anybody out there had these types of procedures done? I am wondering how long a recovery period there is after bone grafting before the implants can be placed and how long a person has to go around without any teeth or a denture while you wait for the grafts and your gums to heal. How long a period there is after implants are placed before you can wear the denture. Also, if you have had this done recently how much it cost you per implant. After it is all said and done...was it worth to pain and money? Are you happy with the results? Thanks, Murray

killler 2 #8 April 11, 2010 I had to have both upper and lower dentures.... I went to Sexton dental in Florence SC. I had the teeth out for six months beforehand and walked in at 6am and walked out at 2:30pm with teeth. No glue or posts and I eat corn on the cob & steak... The only thing I can't do is bite in to a apple. I sent a friend to Sexton and they did the whole teeth removal and dentures in one day. They are a super place to go very reasonable in price. Feel free to ask me anything.. Having had bad teeth my whole life its a joy to smile and feel good about myself. . Jim.... Just wanted to add that a good set of dentures should not need posts to be useful. P.
topdocker 0 #9 April 12, 2010 Hey, I appreciate the referral! This falls under the "major reconstruction" category and requires some pretty extensive pre-operative diagnoses. I would suggest at least two opinions from different implantologists (oral surgsons or periodontists), and at least two restorative dentists (general dentists with extensive background in restoring implants or prosthodontists). I always tell patients that it will be a year in the making. Yes, we may get done sooner, but really a year is a good working time frame. Also, plan on spending lots of appointments with these people- so pick ones you like! PM if you have specific questions. thank you, come again topJump more, post less! TheCaptain 2 #13 April 12, 2010 I have dental implants for my four front top teeth. They removed the teeth in one operation and put artificial bone graft material back in the tooth socket. Six months later they cut a small section of bone from my lower jaw and screwed it in place on my upper jaw. The sight were the bone was placed did not hurt but the sight they took if from did for awhile. Six months after that they drilled the holes and placed the implants, I had an option to be put out or just have a local ( I screwed up and said local). The implants are a self tapping screw so after they drill the hole they screw them in, as they are getting screwed in there is a huge feeling of pressure (Kind of like putting that part of your skull in a vise). After that they cover the sight up and let it heal for 6 months, then they uncover the sight and place the implants. When the teeth are removed the will give you a removable mouth piece that has teeth on it(they call if a flipper), mine was so nice looking I got complements on my teeth. While it is great for cosmetics you can not use it for eating. FYI, the total bill for my implants was right around $40,000 for the four teeth. Lucky for me this was a workmen's comp accident and I paid $0.Kirk He's dead Jim

I was told to sing along with the radio a lot - theory being the more you "practice", the faster your tongue gets used to the partial being in there, the faster your speaking gets back to "normal." After eight months with it, now I think I talk funny without it.

Thanks, Murray Twenty years ago when my 3 tooth bridge was knocked out by an errant softball, I was told that they only like to use implants on the elderly because the lifetime of an implant was much less than that of a bridge. Now, the implant technology has probably improved, but so has the bridge technology. I suggest going to someone that specializes in this and get a couple of opinions. I can give you the names of some dentists in NorCal and SoCal that I've used. I know a lot of dentists in California. .. ryoder 1,590 #21 April 12, 2010 I lost a molar a couple months ago to external resorption. The bone graft was done at the time of extraction. I'm currently in the waiting phase for the bone to grow sufficiently for the implant to be done."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones.
