iluvtofly 0 #1 November 8, 2009 This movie is absolutely hysterical. It had me in tears from laughter. The cast is absolutely phenomenal. At the beginning it says, "More of this is true than you would believe." Well I believe that comment because I wouldn't put it past our military to do something like this (the basic concept that is, maybe not quite as screwy as the movie portrays). nerdgirl 0 #3 November 8, 2009 I haven’t read the book from which the script was adapted. But I do know that one of the main characters is based on retired Army COL John Alexander and some of his experiences and programs. (His wife’s review of the movie.) I met him in 2007 at one of the Army’s “Mad Scientists” conferences. Am curious to see how faithfully he resembles his Hollywood depiction. /Marg Act as if everything you do matters, while laughing at yourself for thinking anything you do matters. quade 4 #6 November 8, 2009 QuoteAm curious to see how faithfully he resembles his Hollywood depiction. I think most of the characters depicted in the movie are composite characters. I don't think any of the names match directly with any of the names in the book. I also think this is appropriate. It's not meant to be a true story even if parts of it are based in some rather unbelievable true events. It's a comedy and a dang fine story, but that's it, a story; not history. I also think that the wife's review (if in fact that actually is who she says she is) is also probably ginned up a bit. Fine film with some really funny stuff, but let nobody be confused on the point that it is fiction. Casting of Ewan McGregor was a stroke of genius just for the Jedi jokes alone. Although I do think that's a bit of a "cheap" way to get some of the laughs and if people don't get them, then I think some of the humor in those scenes will feel a little flat and the audience members will feel like they're missing something.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

JohnMitchell 16 #8 November 8, 2009 Vskydiver and I saw it last night with the kids. Pretty damn funny on many levels, and watching George Clooney do dark comedy is always a hoot. The "Jedi" stuff went over my head 'til V reminded me. I'm not a big Star Wars fan. Definitely worth the $8 ticket.

Saw it today and I have to agree. While there is actually a very true story underneath all of the satirization, most people who were not in the military and or associated with SF around that time frame may not get it. It is evident that the names have been changed but if you are familiar with the story its fairly easy to pick up on who they are supposed to be. An example, the Exhardy(sp) maneuver(and character) and the reference to the knife fighting is a play on what Michael Enchanis was doing back then. Other references in the movie are indeed factual but the over satirization of them in the movie make them look absurd and I think the general populace would never assume them to be true because they seem too out there to be true, it's the old hiding in plain sight trick. The Jedi references are what I'd call a self poke in the eye and are somewhat dry in their humor, which may be why some don't get them, Ewan Mcgregors being a character is even more parody on top of that reference. But the reference is indeed a term that was coined, obviously after the original Star Wars movie. I've heard some people say they thought the movie sucked and I can see how some people could arrive at that conclusion but quite honestly, the TRUE story would be even more boring which is why I think this was turned into a comedy because the truth just isn't as interesting. One of the books that came out after the training some years later was called "In search of the warrior spirt" and kind of recaps what occurred during the actual " Trojan Warrior project". Again, if you aren't familiar with who was involved, the name would seem absurd but if you know anything about SF, you would know which group is affiliated with the trojan horse and then it makes sense. At any rate, there IS an underlying truth to the whole story, just not as ludicrous as they make it to be in the movie."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

There is a name that takes me back! When I was ~20 I was heavily into martial arts, and taking 7 classes/week. I used to read a lot of interesting stuff about Enchanis."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. OMG – that was bad. Shotgun 1 #17 April 6, 2010 I watched this movie last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I almost didn't watch it because of all the bad reviews it has, but I'm glad I did. Lots of funny parts (way more than just what was shown in the trailer), plus I like the underlying "free your mind" theme. I enjoyed the scene where Clooney's character is viewing distant places from his home sofa, because it looked a lot like some of the stuff I have seen in lucid dreams.
