Judging by your profile its advice you clearly took to heart.

That has been mentioned a couple of times. I've been here quite a while - as have you. A lot of people here know me, a lot don't.
I deleted my profile info after the second person encountered trouble at work for what they posted here.
It sucks, but that's just the way it is.

Well diploma phonies are not committing a felony.

Also a college degree does not involve risking ones life in the service of their country.

Plus most college alumni are not tough Mofo's;)

Someone falsely claiming to be an MD or a professional engineer can do a lot more damage than someone falsely claiming to have once been a SEAL. It is also a criminal act.

Hi John,
The guy who "Used to claim" he was an MD or pro engr. will do as much damage as the guy who "Used to be " a Seal. Damage being done by whoever from proclaiming they are something they are not is the issue. Like dig it, a guy shows up in front of you wearing a cop suit, a badge and has his gun drawn, cocked and pointing at your head and says,"You are under arrest!!" Are you going to ask him for his ID????:ph34r::D:D;);)

I don't think SEALs arrest people (or indeed have any special privileges in civilian life.) If they did, then they could do some damage (like your example with the cop.) As it is they just look like dicks, and are best ignored.

Hi Bill,
Your last sentence says it best,"As it is they just look like dicks, and are best ignored." That's fine as long as they don't step in front of you. Unfortunately sometimes these people ply their lies for personal gain at your expense. So you were in line for a promotion but got passed over by someone with higher (claimed and false) qualifications!! 'Hard to ignore that.

Is claiming that oneself is/was a SEAL a violation of the Stolen Valor Act?

I thought it only concerned itself with medals/decorations/awards, etc and not with claims of service?

Has anyone been charged with that act?

Yes, there are several instances, some of them very recently. Google the name Michael McManus or click on THIS.

To address the question as to how someone BSing could cause damage: What if you found out the guy claiming to be your Dr. was not a Dr. at all? There have been instances where people have said they were SF Medics and were filling medical positions in combat zones as contractors and or that they were SF qualified when they were not. Putting your life on the line with a person who has no business being there under the assumption that they are what they claim they are and finding out later that they lied about it is a pretty serious thing.

Likewise, there have been individuals who claimed military service and or injuries ,etc in the public forum to raise money, secure a job, serve as a subject matter expert that were later discovered to be fakes. This hurts the legitimate individuals or organizations that actual exist to help wounded service members and jades the general public. It's akin to having a bunch of Skyrides out there conning people out of money and or betraying their trust.

Wow, I was off line for a few days. Thanks for all the info. Now what he says is that I misunderstood him, He now says he was a Corpsman attached to the Seals, not a Seal himself, I'm gonna let it slide. He's keeping a real low profile since I started to pin him down. Running like a cockroach with the light on.
Thanks,
Van

Even if they do 'step out in front of you' - the bigger man is the one who can ignore the idiot.

Yep, and it happens all the time. People lie on resumes.

No problem - as long as you're not relying on him for medical advice. If he is, then he's defrauding you by charging you for something he is not giving you. And that is a crime.

Skyride are a bunch of assholes as well, and they were dealt with the right way - in court.

Its funny I see this thread now. Something happened recently where I myself busted the person just by being in the right place at the right time. I was laid off from my job a little over three weeks ago. Three days before the layoff happened there was roughly 15 or so of us under the break tent. I was a navy contractor so I worked on navy ships. Well one of the guys went into a story about how he lost his base id badge which is what we used to gain access on the ship. So he used his military id card to get on the ship. That's fine. So here comes the bs. He said he's an army captain. Well for those of you that don't know a navy captain is O6...an army captain is O3. Well people rarely ever look at the department...all they see is the rank. Well he goes into how the quaterdeck watch donged him on and had the XO and all the department heads rushing to the qd. He stopped there. Myself...I'm prior active duty navy(7years) and I'm currently army reserve. Well guess who I see at drill weekend 2 weekends ago? Him wearing PV2 on his chest! For those thar don't know PV2 is private/E2. I didn't say anything as I try not to throw people under the bus but I'm sure he's conscious of the fact that he was busted. Its sad the things people will say to make themselves seem cool.

Exactly. In the sentence following the above quote I wrote about people claiming to be SF medics who were in fact not, yet were filling a position that required that they have those skills, based on their lie, where peoples lives were in the balance. I am not making hypotheticals up here but am stating actual instances. For the people in this line of work, this is as serious as dick cancer and frauds are not tolerated.

And the Stolen Valor Act has been exercised on a few of those who are guilty of this egregious crime and it's about time.

Without getting into a pissing contest I wish Bill would see it from our perspective.

We are not all that special, in fact being looked upon favorably by much of the public has not been the norm until about 1992.

Before then these were the same people who would not give us jobs, would rather fuck us over, or treat us in a derogatory manner if they could.

Some of these fake uber commandos never even went to an AFEES station to take a physical.

I do not deride people for having been a cook or truck driver, if it were not for them I would have not eaten or gotten supplies or fuel.

I am grateful to every one of the veterans who did their jobs no matter how thankless or unglamorous.

We all started at the bottom of the food chain and I never forgot that.

When I was 18yrs old the ARMY took me and and gave me a job, health care, a bed to sleep in and a sense of pride.

Before then I had no job, no prospect of one and nowhere to live.

I did not always love the ARMY, sometimes it sucked ass, I am sure that all veterans can vouch for that.

But I don't forget a favor good or bad.

I don't fail to stick up for those who can no longer do so for themselves either.

The fake I was talking to made me angry because if he were honestly what he claimed to be I feel society failed him or at least his buddies did.

I have gotten good paying jobs and given respect for being a veteran, however it was always by a veteran who was in charge themselves and was looking out for someone else.

When I was discharged I could barely walk.

I was given a job after three years of eeking out a miserable existence and being humbled by the fact nobody would hire me.

My boss told me anyone that would serve his country was alright with him and I was hired before I could walk out of the office.

That was where I met Henry Bivins on my first day at work.

So whos to say this individual didn't seperate from active service then enlist in the army reserves as an enlisted member... it's probably not common but it's not impossible.

and to be honest... I think the "mistaken" rank problem occurs far less often then you might think...

There was a guy that used to work with at the same place as me. He swore he had worked in the JAG or whatever the Army calls it. Well, there are a LOT of former and reserve military where I work and they were able to do some digging and found out that he was basically a typist. Not even a good one.

Then this same guy who swore he was Tom Cruise re-incarnate, quit going to drill, got kicked out and lost his professional license. You can't have anything then an honorable discharge and keep your license (or get one in the first place).

This example isn't on par with the OP's problem, but an example that these persons are in all walks of life in all careers.

Actually, I think it is. Appears it was nothing more than a guy running off at the mouth and back tracking when he was called on it. It happens more often than there are minutes in the day.

The real problem is when these guys go above and beyond just being f.o.s. and their behavior becomes criminal activity. Thankfully, we have established laws for this and are actively prosecuting these people.

Ok i just asked my roommate who used to be a PN. He has never seen or heard of any regulations stating that resigning an officer commission to enlist as an enlisted member.

Really....if you think about it...who would take that kind of a cut? Losing rank, money, and respect? That sounds like a massive NJP..not somthing one would volunteer for.

Wel in that case i would like to see some of the officers i have dealth with become enlisted...but on th flipside i have had some very officers over me. Not everyone is cut out to be a leader. Thats one thing i have noticed about military leadership.
