Engineers.....

Recommended Posts

I've been in facilities that had pretty open dress codes. Sweat pants, etc. were acceptable.
I've also been in places where the dress code was very strict for the professionals. Close-toe shoes, no sneakers, khakis/casual dress slacks of a particular color, collared shirts, sometimes ties required.
HAMMER:
Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a
kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the
object we are trying to hit.

There was an old professor who started every class with a vulgar joke. After one particularly nasty example, the women in the class decided to walk out the next time he started. The professor got wind of this plot, so the next morning he walked in and said, “Good morning, class. Did you hear the one about the shortage of whores in India?” With that, all the women stood up and headed for the door. “Wait, ladies,” cried the professor, “The boat doesn't leave until tomorrow!”

Engineering girls.....eeeeehhhh......between the inferiority complex and the false sense of superiority....thanks but no thanks!
A 7 in the engineering world is a 3 int he business world.
To quote one of my friends who was the only other girl in the engineering class "God I miss engineering school, I always had a date on Friday nights, I just pointed at one of the guys and told him when and where to take me. Now that I'm a teacher....I actually have to dress to impress and shave my legs!"
Yeah there needs to be more girls in engineering to prevent such over inflated sense of self but......let's face it girls are smart! Why work your ass off for 4 years and only make $45k a year when you can party your brains out get an MBA and make $60?

Back in the mid 90's when I was a freshman in engineering, we had to take the state required literature classes but the class was only comprised of engineers. Due to the typical gender ratio of the time, out of 35 people in the class there were only two girls.

We were asked by the prof to explain what an oxymoron is, and I replied "pretty engineer"... well, those two girls wouldn't talk to me for the remainder of college :D

In fairness though, there are some hot ones, and there are more girls in engineering today then there was even 10 years ago... and I married a bio-med who broke the mold of my earlier perception of engineering women :)

Oh yeah, bio and chem have lots of girls.
While EE and Mech E don't seem to....people are still trying to figure out why.

But yeah, it's an over generalization of the facts on the ground to say that engineering girls are "special" but then again the same thing can be said about most male engineers.

Like I said, and the there is a lot of anecdotal evidence to back this up, but smart outgoing people don't become engineers. They may start engineering school but by the end of year 1 they switch out.

And believe it or not, my current job is to get more kids, specially girls, to consider a job in the fields of engineering and science. And it's not easy. In fact I would say it's the hardest job I have ever had. Because in all these jokes, there is a kernel of truth.

Can you please post a link to your evidence?

My boyfriend is an Engineer and he's highly intelligent, extremely outgoing and hilarious, (and dare I add HOT?)
and I am sure he would love to take a peek at this data.

Our data is regarding SAT scores of girls and their chosen career fields.

The data is still "raw" and was collected by North Western University and has yet to be published. But initial evidence seems to indicate that even if a girl is good in math and or science she may not choose engineering or science as a field of study.

As for the "one year and they are out" that is a study being conducted by Virginia Tech in response to Boston University retooling it's first year curriculum to reduce drop out rates from %40 to almost %10 for engineering students.

As for the guys, in every criticism there is a kernel of truth. It's just the nature of the job to be intervened and detail orientated. Those who don't fit the mold, eventually move out of the lab and become managers via obtaining an MBA or just hard work.

Till then I suggest looking at this document published by Engineering UK.
http://www.engineeringuk.com/what_we_do/education_&_research/engineering_uk_2009/10.cfm

I'm told the US version will be published later in the spring. Till then please feel free kicking my shins, but I would greatly appreciate if you went for the left one instead of the right since the right one is still recovering.
Thank you

Many PHD's choose to work for the government.
It's a means by which they can earn a living and continue their research with little to no pressure.

Seemed apropos. The MIT drinking song:

Godiva was a lady who through Coventry did ride
To show the royal villagers her fine and pure white hide
The most observant man of all, an engineer of course,
Was the only one who noticed that Godiva rode a horse

Chorus:
We are, we are, we are, we are, we are the Engineers
We can, we can, we can, we can, demolish forty beers
Drink rum, drink rum, drink rum all day, and come along with us
'Cause we don't give a damn for any old man who don't give a damn for us!

Ace towing roams the Cambridge streets each day and every night
Towing cars and stowing cars to hide them out of sight
They tried to tow Godiva's horse; the Engineers said, "Hey!"
Then towed away their towing truck, and now the Ace must pay!

A maiden and an Engineer were sitting in the park
The Engineer was working on some research after dark
His scientific method was a marvel to observe
While his right hand held the figures, his left hand traced the curves

Princeton's run by Wellesley, and Wellesley's run by Yale
And Yale is run by Vassar, and Vassar's run by tail
Harvard's run by stiff pricks, the kind you raise by hand
But M.I.T. is run by Engineers, the finest in the land

MIT was MIT when Harvard was a pup
And MIT will be MIT when Harvard's time is up
And any Harvard Son of a Bitch who thinks he's in our class
Can pucker up his rosy lips and kiss the beaver's ass

An MIT surveyor once found the gates of Hell
He looked the devil in the eye, and said "You're looking well"
The devil looked right back at him, and said "Why visit me -
You've been through Hell already; you went to MIT!"

An Engineer once stumbled through the halls of Building 10
That night he'd drunken rum enough to drown a dozen men
In fact, the only things there were that kept him on his course
Were the boundary conditions and the Coriolis force

My father peddles opium, my mother's on the dole
My sister used to walk the streets but now she's on parole
My brother runs a "restaurant" with bedrooms in the rear
But they don't even speak to me, 'cause I'm an Engineer

We saved our dough for years to send the kid to MIT
Although we knew it was a place of wild depravity
But now we know our kid is safe and we should have no fear
He's never even heard of sex cause he's an engineer

I am a whore from Radcliffe and I fuck for fifty cents
I'll lay my ass upon the grass, my pants upon the fence
I'll let you rub my belly and on sundays fuck for free.
But get off of me you son of a bitch, if you're from MIT!

And the MIT football cheer, much adapted by other schools:

e to the x du dx, e to the x dx
Secant cosine tangent sine
3.14159
Square root integral udV
Slipstick sliderule MIT

Let me tell you, that MIT football team would hear that cheer, it would get their spirits up - and they'd lose again, as always.

THIS IS NOT CORRECT!!!!!!!!!

Believe it or not, I am the original author of that
cheer. In 1969 I was a student at FIT in Melbourne, FL, and as a pledge to the Delta Delta Tau Fraternity I was assigned to write some cheers for an upcoming basketball game. Among them was that cheer. Originally it was:

e to the x dy dx, e to the x + C
secant tangent cosine sine
3.14159
GO ENGINEERS!

I have no idea how it eventually got to MIT but I was very surprised to hear it a few years ago on a televised MIT football game (with the changes). We did have some fraternity brothers from Mass at that time and maybe that's how it got there. I dunno! But now I am now officially claiming credit for it! I have proof and there are still living people who remember it! (I have no other claims to fame so I am going to rightfully claim this one. :)

Here is a scan of the original mimeographed handout. (Looks like I have a case of CRS.:P) If you youngsters don't know what "mimeograph" is, just enlarge this image, hold the monitor up to your nose, and breathe deeply.

After looking up some old papers from school, I think this may have been for the 1970 basketball season. I vaguely remember a new gym about that time. Within a year or two after I left FIT our local fraternity (Delta Delta Tau) joined the national organization Theta Xi as the Gamma Beta Chapter so it had to be before that. Theta Xi closed its chapter at FIT only a few years ago. At some point, the school mascot became "The Panthers" but we were "The Engineers" when I was there. They also adopted the name "Florida Tech" which, at that time, was used by FTU (now UCF) in Orlando. Many of the DDT bros. from back then are now very involved with FIT and the FIT Alumni Assn.

I had that poem modified for me, since I am a Fluid/thermo engineer.

e to the x. dy dx,
e to the x, dx
secant, tangent, cosine, sine,
3.14159
pi, i, square root of 3,
flow, rho, delta T.

I hereby grant you permission to use my "poem" in that fashion as long as you derive no financial gain from its use.:S:D:D All science is built upon the foundations laid down by those who have gone before. :)

My school was a small engineering school (about 3,000 students, total), with eight engineering degrees, one chemistry and one geology. But our football team did pretty well - going to the national championship for 2A. No one noticed, because, well, it's 2A. Our secret - our cheerleaders were the third-string - these girls were like tanks.
Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
