Ortega Hwy (Hwy 74)

Recommended Posts

SoCal peeps,
I'm coming to SoCal to do some jumping at Perris and 'Snore. Instead of the boring ass drive on 91, I was thinking of taking a scenic route from LAX - LBC - PCH - Dana Pt - Ortega Hwy - Elsinore. I've never driven the PCH, but I hear that it is beautiful, hence why I was thinking of going this way. I know this way may be longer....but I get in at 10:30am on a thursday, so I have plenty of time.

Thoughts? Good idea, so-so idea, or smoking PCP bad idea? Thanks

I'd skip the section of PCH from Long Beach to Seal Beach and pick it up south of the 605; way too many traffic signals and none-too-scenic. Maybe take 405 to Seal Beach Blvd exit south to pick up PCH.

I don't know it's current state but the Ortega Highway was just recently in the news as partially closed due to storm damage. And there's another storm due tonight (Thursday) so make sure and check before leaving the airport or wherever you're starting from.

Ortega Hwy is the most fun I have had in a car in a long time. If you have a good car, Ortega can be just as fun as the day at the DZ. Just try not to kill the crotch rockets flying by you at 80mph on a steep curve next to a cliff face. I would highly recommend the drive.

THAT'S no shit! :o

I use to take it across on the way home from Elsinore to San Diego...often 'safer' following beer light festivities on Saturday night.

There were always enough cops on 15 at night to film a 'Smokey & the Bandit' movie!

Feelin' good and moving fast through the switchbacks top down in the Vette one night, well past midnight...I'm over-steering through a slide on a blind corner that unfortunately put me in the oncoming lane, which actually WAS fortunate because at that moment a rice-rocket is scratching the peg using my recently occupied outside of the turn lane as the triple digit line through the corner...

We went past each other on the 'wrong' side, in each other lane at or near terminal velocity. :S:S:S

Never did THAT again! B|

As for PCH, Laguna Beach traffic is pretty crazy also.

For Ortega, I haven't driven it in a few months, but I'm very familiar with that road... too familiar to be honest. I rolled my truck on that road back in 2005, and I'm amazed I'm still here to write this. I rolled it because I was younger and dumber, haulin' ass to get to a buddy's party around midnight. Where I wrecked, there was about a 150 ft. shear dropoff. Somehow, I managed to stay on the road. I still drive it most times I head out to Elsinore, but now I take it a little more easy.

The drive is great. Very pretty. There's a couple lookout points and if you go at the right time, it's absolutely gorgeous. There's also a couple good stops up there. Hells kitchen is a biker bar that has some really good eats. There's a jerky place up there I've been wanting to stop at for a long time, and for some reason, I always kept driving saying I'd do it the next time. One of these days I'll hit it up.

As long as you don't drive like you'll win the lottery if you break the record time, you'll be glad you made the trip. Take your time and enjoy it. When you get a group of cars behind you wanting to go faster (if you do) slide out into a turnout and let 'em pass. Then you won't be losing your enjoyment by worryin' about that asshole that rides 8 inches from your back bumper.

Hope this was helpful. Have fun with it.:)

Some people refrain from beating a dead horse. Personally, I find a myriad of entertainment value when beating it until it becomes a horse-smoothie.

>>I 'think' it is also the highway where one of the SoCal serial killers left some bodies??????
NickDG??????Naw, I always dump my bodies straight into Lake Elsinore.
You do know they've never found the bottom of that lake?
NickD :)

Actually, more than a couple of bodies have been dumped over the cliffs of 74.

Googling "ortega highway body found" returns a fair selection of results.

;)Good call on the Ortega Hwy. It's a great drive. Lots of fun. Keep an eye out for motorcycles.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Thanks for the info everyone! I'm glad to see that it will be a cool drive. Sounds like I'll want to change my route a little based on the feedback I got. I appreciate the heads up on the problem areas. Hopefully my rental car will be up for the challenge.

Just get a sporty one and you'll really enjoy the Ortega. If you're really on your game, you'll give the motorcyclists a run for their money as they wonder how they can lose you on a straight, only to catch up in the twisties... :P
