futuredivot 0 #1 February 15, 2010 my wife wants to save a bunch of old family photos of varying sizes-If I'm going to have to buy one, I want ease of document scanning also. Easy to use is a must or I'll end up having to do all of those photographs of people I didn't know and probably wouldn't have liked if i did. Any VALID advice on a good all-around scanner? You are only as strong as the prey you devour
airdvr 210 #2 February 15, 2010 My experience is the scanner is only as good as the PC that controls it. I bought a Brother All -in-One machine several years ago and was running it off my old laptop. It really struggled to scan photos. Hooked the same machine to my new desktop and it doesn't even grunt when scanning high-res photos. My $.02Please don't dent the planet. kkeenan 14 #4 February 15, 2010 I'm a big fan of the Nigerian Bank President. But, then again, the Indian holy woman working with orphans is a pretty good scam. When it comes to scammers, there are so many good ones, it's hard to pick._____________________________________ Dude, you are so awesome... Can I be on your ash jump ? tkhayes 348 #6 February 15, 2010 I got a CanoScan 4400F attached to my Mac, it works like a charm. They have newer drivers on the Canon website to make it work, all was compatible with OsX. I had an older CanoScan attached my PC years ago - it worked really well too.
FlyingJ 0 #7 February 16, 2010 Whatever scanner you get, keep your eye out for software that will recognize multiple pictures being scanned at once and crop them apart for you. My sister just finished scanning updwards of 5000 family photos for a family DVD she made and that saved her hours upon hours of time. Not the best option for scanning a few pics here and there as it occasionally gets it wrong, but if you are doing lots even if it only gets 80% of them right that is a lot of time saved. I'll ask her what software she was using and post again.Killing threads since 2004.
LadyDoc 0 #8 February 16, 2010 I've got an HP Photosmart 4500, and it prints, scans, reads memory cards. I like it. Sometimes it forgets what I want it to do and I have to turn it off and turn it back on. But the scan quality is brilliant. color copies are beautiful. Photo prints look great. If you disbelieve everything because we cannot certainly know all things, we shall do much-what as wisely as he would not use his legs, but sit still and perish because he had no wings to fly.-JL

BillyVance 34 #13 February 16, 2010 Quote Will tha standard software for the Photsmart allow to scan multiple images at a time? I have no idea. However, one thing it does have is a special rack for holding negatives (strips) and slides for scanning. I thought that was pretty neat. My dad has a shitload of boxes full of slides from the 70's. We used to have photo viewing sessions with the projector and screen. I see a future project converting those slides to prints."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
FlyingJ 0 #14 February 16, 2010 I've asked my sister what combo of scanner and software she used that had that feature. I'll post back when I hear from her.Killing threads since 2004.
xtravrtsoul 0 #15 February 16, 2010 I have the HP scanjet 4850 and it does everything as well as scanning mutliple pictures. Take a look at one of these. I have used mine for 3 years and love it.You create life, life does not create you.

I imagine the feature to crop the pics is all in the scanner, so you can probably just find it to use with any scanner. This one did well though making it through thousands of photos. In fact, I think the scanner made it through the process in better shape than my sister. I have a different (and less expensive) version of the same printer/scanner/copier and I love it.Killing threads since 2004.

FlyingJ 0 #20 February 23, 2010 Excellent. My sister did an absolutely amazing job, scanning thousands of photos and then editing them to various songs and compiling everything on an hour and a half long dvd for my parents. The only thing she regrets about the process is that she's now been asked to do one for my brother's upcoming wedding, for work and for a friend's family. Have fun with it!Killing threads since 2004.
