ltdiver 3 #76 January 20, 2010 Quote Was that 98? there was a worse flood there around 92 if I remember right, I saw hundreds of skydivers lose their shoes trying to walk in from the muddy swamps, I never landed in the water once, but most of our Students landed in the north field, which is higher, and I was filming them! There was a flood at perris I believe in the 70's that many old timers talked about, they even shot video of carp swimming threw the Office! Well, you got me there. I wasn't skydiving at Perris back then. I was some place a bit dryer. I'd love to see the pics you have of that time period. I could post the one pic I have of a certain skydiver all muddy, head to toe, but I'd probably get banned for it. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
skyrider 0 #77 January 20, 2010 Quote Quote California, where people think they are superior to everyone else, until it rains or snows or heavy traffic. Or just about anything else, damn don't they realize it rains just about everywhere else? We had people honking their horns and flipping us off while we were in a convoy because we had to pass them during a rain storm. What is this "anywhere else" you are talking about? warpedskydiver 0 #80 January 20, 2010 Quote No one I've seen is panicking. What I do see are trees blowing over on top of cars (kinda hard to foresee), roofs being torn off (not terribly easy to foresee), and hard-baked soil due to drought that prevents the ground from absorbing an inordinate amount of rain. Saw a boat sink in the harbor at San Diego today too. Not sure how they could have foreseen that, exactly. Sure, folks can run away. It's not the "getting out" that is the issue. It's what they might come back to not find. Yeah, some folks in SoCal can't drive for shit. So what? That means they should enjoy property damage? Here storm clips are required so that the roofs don't get easily ripped off. IIRC it would take a 100PMH wind to do so with the clips/straps We get plenty of rough weather here and in other parts of the country, sadly many of the codes in CA neglected to address the fact that earthquakes were not the only risk factor. Some of the tile roofs will catch quite a bit of lift, not good, same for some other materials.
DSE 5 #81 January 20, 2010 Sometimes unexpected things happen, and that's the way it is. People lose possessions which often translates to homes, not "houses." Tornados aren't common on the coasts of California. Any more than earthquakes are common in Illinois. "Warped" doesn't begin to explain your thought process. NickDG 23 #82 January 20, 2010 We just found out we are one block outside the mandatory evacuation zone, but inside the warning area . . . Here's the video I mentioned up-boad and as you'll see this area has a long history of this sort of thing and it's well know by the residents here. (Regardless of what Warped thinks.) And the combination of the recent fires (the largest in LA history) plus the El Nino WX pattern is bumping this up into the "perfect storm" category. http://glendale.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?publish_id=54 And I was going to paint Nina this week . . . warpedskydiver 0 #83 January 20, 2010 Well I certainly do not wish anyone loses their possessions. I think you missed my point, I feel the same way about people around here who build or buy homes in a flood plain, then wanting someone to save their houses. We see that every spring, I have even been involved in certifying that areas were or were not in a Zone C FEMA FIRM Map. They build next to a river or creek, there are water stains on buildings standing on higher ground that reach seven feet up the side. Then they want to sue someone because they are certain they did not build in a flood plain and that the topography is wrong. Do this a few hundred times in your life and you see a pattern. NickDG 23 #86 January 20, 2010 Thank you Carl, that's really appreciated . . . But so far so good here @ 11:40AM. I went up the street looking to see if anyone needed help getting out as this is an older neighborhood with lots of seniors. It looks like most people left sometime over night or early this morning but there were plenty who are going to ride it out. I can applaud a hearty spirit but I'm not sure they realize the gravity of the situation. Some of this I suppose is due to evacuation fatigue, as some of them have been evacuated several times during the fire and a previous storm. Both the large catch basins that bookend us are already full. And their outlet conduits simply can't empty them fast enough. The worst of the rain is almost upon us so the next few hours will tell the tale . . . NickD

How's things going up there? Neighbor's tree (a big one) fell in the street from the wind. Virtually a repeat of the previous two days, strong wind and rain, followed by a break for a couple hours, then another wave of wind and rain...still raining up here north of Sacramento. Minor flooding here and there, just sitting water, no flash floods. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! ltdiver 3 #89 January 21, 2010 Winds high and squirrely tonight. Rain sideways. Weatherunderground says the wind is from the south, but it may snow tomorrow? How's that for weird. For it to snow, here, the wind is usually from the north. I'll repeat what I'm hearing about this next one being the worst, but they've been saying that about every storm so far. Currently they are showing the latest press conference/thankathon/political-media-grab-fest. Kind of a joke really. So far the real heroes have been the local people like the lady who spent all last night schlepping hot coffee up to the agencies on the front lines. And the retired school teacher who walks the neighborhood once a day knocking on doors to make sure everyone is okay. They're telling us if the mud comes it will sound like a freight train headed our way. And yesterday I left the air compressor in the garage plugged in (which I never normally do), and yes it started up about 2:AM and scared the crap out of Julia and me. NWFlyer 2 #99 January 21, 2010 Sounds like it's the winds that are giving everyone fits today - I just read that Southwest has stopped flying in/out of Burbank, Ontario, San Diego, and Orange County (as well as Phoenix & Tucson) because of winds. SO happy I got to come home from my work trip a day early. It's wet up north, but at least the winds are pretty moderate right now.
