Epocrates for Blackberry couldn't live without it.

I loved having that on my BB but it kept killing my phone. Whenever it did its bi-wkly updates my phone would freeze up and shut down so i finally had to get rid of the app. I miss epocrates...[:/]

How do you know where to find them?

If you've had your BB for a while, you need to download the latest OS from Blackberry - that means downloading the OS from the BB website, hooking up your computer to the thing, and installing it to the phone. It'll take a bit of time to do all that.

But once you have, you'll have a new program called "Blackberry app world". You can then surf around for Blackberry apps. There aren't as many as for the iPhone, but there are more than enough to keep you busy. I use Viigo and Facebook frequently, Xenouzu and Shazam once in a while.

Geocache Navigator, Blackstar at the moment... I'm looking for a BB Storm compatible Astronomy app, something that shows major constelllations, perhaps a link to the 'story' behind it. Any ideas?

Google "iphone jailbreaking". I was making a  allusion to my personal opinion that a jailbroken iphone is much more useable, and interesting. Internet tethering, video camera on the 3g, customizable themes, are some of the benefits. :)

I was going to ask about that... but didn't know whether that is considered "shared" information. :D:D Just didn't know if it was considered tacky to ask "have you jailbreaked?":o:oB|

I was told that I just had to get a "Barcode Scanner" app. But after looking at some of the reviews of it, I'm scratching my head and wondering why in the world I want it?

If I'm going to be scanning a barcode, it's undoubtedly going to be for something I want to buy that day. According to most of the reviews of several different apps of that type, they all complain that there's no local stores.

Anyone have an opinion on this app?

Winterboard
Cydia

I was hesitant to jailbreak the phone, but after reading a ton of shit, I decided to give it a try. No issues at all, and removed all the ridiculous limitations Apple put on it.

Screenshots attached...

Anyone know the best app for tethering?

Pdanet does well, it requires you to create an adhoc wireless network (very easy) then it uses your 3g to tether. Also if you want to pay, MyWi gives you a 10 day free trial, but then they want a 10 dollar fee to continue. Of course, remember, AT&T are not supporting tethering, so they could end up charging you. Depends on what you're doing with it. P2P downloads all month, maybe. Internet browsing, prob not.;)

There's apps for Blackberry people too? :o How do you know where to find them?

There are a few good sites: crackberry.com, Bplay.com

Usually you can also simply google "blackberry free _____" and the type of app you are looking for and you will likely come across something, which may end up being free or not.

A lot of people don't know that if you simply hit the 'back' key to leave a program it stays running in the background. You need to actually go to the menu and 'close or exit' the program to keep memory freed up.

I have a STORM and found an app called "QuickPull" this simulates a battery pull, you can set it for 4am and it keeps your memory freed up. I use to have the same problem with Epocrates crashing my phone until I set QuickPull to run before Epocrates updates. Haven't had a prob since and the phone is quicker in general. Pretty sure you can get it for the Curve etc... too.

I think I saw that Medscape also came out with a drug reference but haven't looked into it yet.

Must have free apps for Blackberry:

-Google Maps (use with GPS)
-QuickPull - keeps your phone running fast
-FlyCast - free Satellite radio
-BlackStar - Compass, Altitude, Speed, and more (use with GPS) - (very cool cause speed can also convert to knots).

My favorite iphone application of late is Pocket Universe. You can hold your phone up and scan around the sky and it shows you what constellations, planets, etc. in your field of view. You can also look at "tonight's sky" and see what should be visible. Do a "find" search and it will guide you until you are pointing in the right direction, etc.

For many of the features in the sky you can link to a Wiki article on it as well. Not sure it will do you much good living in a big town with lots of light pollution, but out here in rural country it's amazing!!!
Killing threads since 2004.
