So, uh, you going to tell us the story? Was the person under you in your group or another group? I'm assuming you're the guy with the camera - it doesn't appear you tracked at all - why not?

The guy under me was supposed to turn 180 degrees and track away. I was the base so I was to pull in place. It didn't happen that way but it all worked out in the end. I would up with a broken camera and him a busted chute nad both of us had a little pain...

...i dont understand the hand print on your leg from going through someones canopy can you explain?

Apparently, there was a person hanging under the other canopy and he hit their hand.

BTW, I have well over 3000 video jumps, and still tell any New group, and some old ones, The Middle is mine, and I do not pull high! soem assclown fugure the camera is going to dump at tracking time, so they can dick aroudn and do flips...WRONG...what if the cameraperson malfunctions? they need the middle all the way down!

Briefing that you are going to pull in place is all well and good, but that doesn't relieve you of the responsibility of being aware and looking around. From the video, it looked to me that the guy with the camera never looked anywhere but at one guy tracking away. That was some scary shit!

So the guy's canopy I went through fell out of the group earlier but didn't track away. I was the base and was supposed to pull in place as planned. It didn't work that way. By the time I waved off it was too late to do anything. I glanced down and bam!

Actually I had the camera and I went thru his canopy and struck his shoulder (left hand) and leg (right hand) as I was trying to push to the right and get out of his way. If not, his head would have drove through my chest.

Shit that's crazy!!!!!!!! I can't believe the guy that fell out of the group didn't track away. Also I don't know if those first number of jumpers were doing a tracking dive or planning a group, but if they weren't planning on staying together there was no separation.

Wow... glad you guys are ok.

My take on it too. Look everywhere, that includes down. :|

Same thing almost happened to me once;
At breakoff I looked down just in time to see a pilot chute coming at me.
I went into the hardest track I could, and I think I my toes missed the inflating canopy by ~4 feet.:S

This is where you have the responsibility as a camera flyer to recognize that there is as jumper missing, and to locate that jumper before you continue to shoot a video. If you're a good camera flyer, you can do this while continuing to film the others. If you're not as good, you have to look away from the other and locate the missing jumper.

You may claim that you were not acting as a camera flyer on that jump, but when you filmed the other jumper tracking away, and never took him out of frame, that makes you a camera flyer. If you were not wearing a camera, you wouldn't have just stared at the guy tracking, you would have been involved with your own situation. Once you make filming another jumper your own situaiton, you take on the roll of camera flyer, as well as the responsibility (see above).

Then you should have pulled. As it was, you clearly just sat there, falling as others tracked away. Once the others in your group have departed and are tracking away from you, this is the time to clear the air above you and pull.

If you pull while the others are still tracking, you will be open higher then them and will have no risk of a canopy collision (canopy to canopy). Additionally, the other jumpers, who will be opening 500ft (or more) below you, will have a reduced risk of a canopy collision because you will not be opening your canopy down at their level. It's a win/win. You have to dump as soon as you are clear.

This incident is a prime example of a camera creating a distraction. You may or may not think so, but you never would have followed that same course of action without a camera on your head. You would have never just sat there in freefall staring at another jumper tracking away, only to look where you are going at the last second. That jumper was under you in freefall, waving off, and deploying long before you saw him. If you had been paying attention to your surroudings, you would have had ample time to spot him much earlier in the skydive.
