ABerry83 1 #4 October 26, 2009 Since you already have Vista and would likely only be paying the upgrade cost instead of the full cost, I'd say go for it. It's not drastically different by any means, but it kinda is in a way. You'll definitely notice it runs much faster and smoother than Vista as it utilizes your system resources and ram much more efficiently. The interface finally makes sense, mainly because they stole a bit from Apple's OS. W7 does a good job of finding any drivers that you need (especially if you have a newer computer that's only a year or two old) so you don't have to go hunting for all those pesky drivers on the Internet...it makes the install/upgrade process much easier for more less computer savvy people to tackle by themselves. Of course you'd want to backup EVERYTHING first on external media or hard drives...but my vote is YES! I pre-ordered my copy on Amazon for $50, so it was worth the upgrade cost to me. Enjoy! skymama 37 #5 October 26, 2009 Thanks for the info, I didn't even know you could buy an upgrade version. Thanks for the reminder to backup also, I'm really bad about doing that and probably wouldn't have remembered. normiss 845 #7 October 26, 2009 You have a son in college, check the education version price - usually cheaper than the upgrade even. I'll have a few copies of it next week...maybe we can schedule a "service call".
BillyVance 34 #8 October 26, 2009 Quotebest to run this before you buy the upgrade. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx Yep, I did that. And found out that my pre-ordered copy of Windows 7 Professional could not be installed as an upgrade to my version of Vista, so I ended up having to do a clean install, which meant backing up all my personal documents, photos, videos etc. I had just gotten the new computer in July with Vista preloaded, and didn't have any problems with it, likely due to the fact that Microsoft probably worked out all or most of the bugs in it the last couple years. Harmless 0 #11 October 26, 2009 My favorite diagnosis... I do have one complaint on Win7 so far... it refused to recognize my NVidia Nforce 2 chipset on my motherboard... that is only 4 years old. After messing with it for hours... it magically started working. Oh that and the damn windows boot loader always writes over GRUB, so I have to fix that too. (But I'll wait for Ubuntu 9.10 to release in a few days before worrying about it.)"Damn you Gravity, you win again"
LaRusic 0 #12 October 27, 2009 Running windows 7 64 bit version, its very stable and runs everything i have great. If vista is running stable for you, you may not notice a huge difference but it is there. Benchmarks are higher with windows 7 then with vista or xp. Install took about 10 min and really no imput from me and pretty well had all of the drivers i needed pre loaded, as opposed to sitting for 30 with xp, then messing around with drivers disks (by the way, everyone can buy the upgrade version, there is a nice little workaround that lets u install windows 7 even if you dont have xp or vista)The Altitude above you, the runway behind you, and the fuel not in the plane are totally worthless Dudeist Skydiver #

kallend 2,106 #19 December 30, 2009 I just bought a Toshiba netbook that came with Windows 7 Starter Edition. Jeez, is it ever spastic! It keeps trying to get me to upgrade - MS must know what a POS it is. I have no intention of giving MS any more money, I think I'll install XP instead.... BikerBabe 0 #20 December 30, 2009 nah, windows 7 is good...starter version is just pared down. and the spam must be a toshiba thing. I bought an HP netbook with it on there and haven't been asked about upgrading once. It's really not a POS...it's about 457130547340571307 times better than vista. Of course, the best is mac or linux, but if you MUST have a PC, win7 is not bad. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! Are there any products that run on Win7 that wont on XP? To answer your question, it is my understanding that programs designed to run on Win7 will not be backward compatible to XP. However, because there are so many XP users still out there, I don't think you'll run into problems finding the products you want. A few years from now, that may not be the case. Having said that, I think you sold yourself short. MS really did get it right (I think so anyway) this time. I didn't even bother with Vista, even though they cleared up the garbage in the later years. Win7 so far, has none of those issues, and short of bumbling with a driver here or there, I haven't had any issues. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
