End of the decade Dec 31, 2009 or Dec 31, 2010?

One more example to set this straight, Everyone was born at 0 years old not 1 year old. If you thing you were born 1 year old then you'll never catch up.

I dislike this argument (which I've heard from various people) because the logic is faulty. If there weren't a year 0 (which there wasn't in those days at least for how they set up the calendar) then the children would start at 1.

Shit, you make me feel old. It's depressing seeing that kids born in like 1992 are in high school now. [:/]

What's worse is kids born in '92 are becoming legal this year :S

After further research they were legal 2 years ago in your state. Go poach you some high school sophomores... I'm sure those guys know what they are doing. :D

Which means I was most likely in college when you (i.e. BikerBabe) were born :|

If it weren't for our strange and pointless obsession with 'significant' dates (and ages!), we wouldn't be having this debate anyway.

It's like the way we categorise decades by their fashion and music - the eighties, the nineties, the noughties - as if everything changes at the end of ten years instead of on a rolling basis.

Odd, innit?

Once more folks. ALL of the numbers in our known universe come from 0 -9, not 1 - 10. It really isn't that hard to understand.

Hate to break this to ya old man. But while common sense and logic may be the best answer, humans by nature don't always allow logic to dictate how things are done and therefore when they invent things (like the calendar) common sense and logic don't always prevail. 1 (the year at which the modern calendar starts) + 10=11. Therefore the new decade starts at the year 11, 21, 31... 2011, 2021, 2031

Stitch can give all the contradictory (and logical) examples he likes, unfortunately no amount of logic can change the fact there is a definitive answer.

As I pointed out, the year 1 isn't significant anyway, since they screwed up the beginning of the calendar.
Christ was actually born sometime around 4 or 6 BC, so the year 1 is insignificant.

Might as well go with Logic and Common sense then, rather than looking back at the (screwed-up) beginning of the calendar.

The real difference for practical purposes is that when you're writing out the date, you gotta put that "1" in there instead of a "0".

So Stich is correct, both from the Logic standpoint AND from the common-usage standpoint.

That's not old. Being 90 and pooping your pants is old :)
My mom is freaking about me turning 20 this year, though. Says she's officially going to be an old lady when that happens. I cant help but laugh at her. She'll be 41. :D

ACK, I'm old enough to be your mother! :o

A decade is any period of 10 years.
So depending when you start, you are right on both dates.

Except there is no year zero, therefore the 10th year is always the last year of the decade.

Its ANY 10 years, so it could be from 1999 to 2009 or from 2000 to 2010, its the same thing.

Whether the year 1 is significant or insignificant is of no importance. The calendar still starts at year 1. You can't just say that because something isn't significant it didn't exist. For lack of a better example, neither you nor I are significant in the role of humanity as a whole but we still exist.

The first day of the month is the first (1). The first month of the year is January (1). The first year is 1. Therefore (in mm/dd/yyyy format)...

The 1st decade is: 01/01/0001 to 12/31/0010
The 2nd decade is: 01/01/0011 to 12/31/0020
The 3rd decade is: 01/01/0021 to 12/31/0030

and so on until:

The 198th decade is: 01/01/1971 to 12/31/1980
The 199th decade is: 01/01/1981 to 12/31/1990
The 200th decade is: 01/01/1991 to 12/31/2000
The 201st decade is: 01/01/2001 to 12/31/2010
The 202nd decade is: 01/01/2011 to 12/31/2020

The odometer may have rolled over in January but the 201st decade doesn't end until December.

Also:

The 1st century is: 01/01/0001 to 12/31/0100
The 1st century is: 01/01/0101 to 12/31/0200
The 1st century is: 01/01/0201 to 12/31/0300
...
The 19th century is: 01/01/1801 to 12/31/1900
The 20th century is: 01/01/1901 to 12/31/2000
The 21st century is: 01/01/2001 to 12/31/2100

And finally:

The 1st millenium is: 01/01/0001 to 12/31/1000
The 2nd millenium is: 01/01/1001 to 12/31/2000
The 3rd millenium is: 01/01/2001 to 12/31/3000

Since by tradition we use the birth of Christ, then the first decade was -5 to +4, second decade was 5 to 14 AD etc.

It makes no more nor less sense.

There was no year zero because back then they used the Roman Numeral system. They didn't adopt the Arabic Numeral system (with its number zero) until centuries later.

For practical purposes in today's world, we have to put that number "1" in there when we write the date.

Our calandar is loosly based on the birth of Christ. If it were precise, we'd celebrate Christmas on January 1st.

What I can tell you is that right now where I'm at it is January 4, 2010 4:35pm. This puts me in the 2,010th year, the 201st decade, the 21st century, and the 3rd millenium with begining and end dates noted above.

Since a decade refers to any 10 year period regardless of when it actually started, someone may celebrate a decade being "smoke free" on whatever date they gave up smoking.

Someone may also celebrate the decade of the 'oughts' (2000 to 2009), but that's just celebrating there being a zero in the tens place digit of the year.

If someone wants to celebrate the turn of the millenium (i.e., going from the 2nd to the 3rd), the turn of the century (from the 20th to the 21st), or the turn of the decade (from the 201st to the 202nd), then that would only happen when a year that ends in zero changes to a year ending in one.
