Recommended Posts

So.. Im thinking of buying another motorcycle. ;):)
It has been about 2 years since I have riden. I have only bought one other motorcycle, it was a 1983 Yamaha XJ 750... Pretty nice bike.. But now I am leaning more towards a crotch rocket.. I found this deal on craigslist, and want to know from the motorcycle people what yall think.. Is this a good deal?

Also.. What do i look for/at when purchasing a bike... Here is the link to it.

Also.... It would go VERY nice with my black truck... ;)B|

My bike is very similar to that, they are quite nice, alot more comfy than the modern "super-sports" and certainly quick enough. My bike (Yamaha) is a 2002 model and has 35k miles on the clock - I have put the last 20k on it with alot of abuse (I am not mechanical and it gets serviced/fixed when it sounds odd).

I have a 2003 YZF600r with nearly 40,000 miles on it and it's a great bike. Can't tell you if the one in the ad is a good deal tho.

Couple things stood out to me while reading the ad. If it has the fender eliminator kit installed why is there still a fender? Granted I don't have one of those on my bike but I'm not seeing what was eliminated. Also why the new fairings if it has never been layed down or dropped? Everyone drops their first bike....And why are the mirrors at a friend's house?

First off, 11K on a sportbike is not low mileage. Second off, dont be a pussy, if you are going to buy a yamaha buy a R1. I dont care how inexperienced you are, sure you may wreck it or kill yourself but at least you will have fun doing it. 600's are for girls.

And this is why young boys die on bikes that are too much for them.

lemme guess, your first bike was a 'busa, right?

OP, If you haven't ridden in 2 years, then a 600 sounds just about right. maybe 750. 1000cc superbike? not so much.

do you ride with friends? what do they ride? do you want to be the slowest one in the bunch? do you want to look like a retard dragging up the rear while they are up on one wheel a mile ahead of you?

No, you dont. you want to be a badass, isnt that afterall why you ride motorcycles? dont listen to these people here, they are to busy sitting on the porch wishing they had the energy to get up and change their depends while they watch all the badboys ride by on 1000's.

Thanks.. but i wasnt planning on spending that much on a bike.. I like that it is $2500... Which is my price range...

Good points on the new fairings... I will have to ask him that... But.. If it has new fairings, does it matter if it was laid over??

Yea, I wont need more power than 600... O-60 in under 4 seconds is fast enough for me right now.

Any other questions I could ask?

Just make sure to wear your rig on your back leaving the hackey partially exposed. It is not a good idea to secure the hackey or place the rig in a gear bag. Your rig, and the hackey need to breathe, what better way to accomplish this then doing 100mph down the road on your bike :)

Im not falling for that! :P:P

but... Theoritically... What if that did happen? Like the PC came out while your going 70mph... Would it go up, like a parachute pulled behind a boat, or would you slam straight into the ground?

Ideas?

He just texted me and said that "the previous owner did all the aftermarket work/paint. He said they were scuffed up from the guy he bought it from, but it has been as is since 05'"

Just leaves room for suspicion is all. If he's lieing about that then what else is he lieing about. He could have just wanted to update the look but it is his first bike.

Othe questions? Yeah... has it ever been in an accident or layed down?

I don't know about the ad you posted, but I love 600s. Through the twisties and clicking up and down the gears....way fun in my book.

You really need to look at the bike in person, and take it for a ride. Check out the chains, etc.

11K miles on a 10 year old bike is very low mileage. You need to try an find out if he stored it during the winter? If so, did he/she do so correctly? If it were my money I'd ask about riding it to a shop if you want.

YZFs are great everyday bikes. So are many Honda F600-series. Since it's only been a couple years, depending on your budget, check out some used Honda Interceptors too (VFR series, 750-800cc), nothing like the sound of a V-Four with gear driven cams...sweet music...B|

If you want a real street racer, you might consider looking at Suzuki GSX-R 600 and 750s, Kawasaki ZXRs 6-7, etc, but if the YZF caught your eye, those other models might suit you too.

So "never been dropped or layed over" was a lie. Sorry dude. Keep looking.

I'd agree with keep looking. Miles are a little high, but not unrealistic.

My questions would be about how it was ridden. Most guys don't do the mods unless they plan on utilizing them. Most modded bikes are ridden pretty hard.

Being dropped isn't a deal-breaker, but again, it can give an idea of how the bike was treated.

How old is the owner? Personally, I'd never buy a bike from someone under 25. Mainly because I remember how I treated my vehicles at that age:)

OTOH, I'll agree with a "mid-sport" 600 for where you are. The Supersport 600s need to be revved way up (like above 7k) in order to get real power, and the bigger bikes are like smaller canopies - Great for the ego, but you best be tough and have good insurance if you aren't skilled and current:P

No worries. Although I had a 600 also. Couldn't stand the lack of power, so went up to the FZ1. Has the R1 engine, just geared slightly different.

Sounds to me like that guys bike has been down before, possibly.
