Miranda 0 #1 December 29, 2009 My daughter got a new Dell Inspiron for Christmas from her dad. He gave it to her and she immediately started using it...without any sort of virus protection. The first day she got a virus called Security Tool Virus. It's really nasty and I had a tough time getting it off of her computer. I'll admit I don't know anything about computers so you all may already know about this, but I thought I'd share anyway and hopefully save someone else the headache. Oh, and please don't tell me that only an idiot would use a computer without some sort of virus protection...we already know that ;~)
elightle 8 #2 December 29, 2009 I'm not all that savvy about computers either but a PC repair shop recommended AVG, free anti-virus software. I've been using it for well over a year and haven't had a problem. Here's a link: http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html Hope this helps! IanHarrop 42 #3 December 29, 2009 According to this page, there is a manual way to remove it http://www.techjaws.com/how-to-remove-security-tool-virus/ the page also says you can just download and run Malwarebytes to remove this, its free and good stuff http://www.malwarebytes.org/"Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy

Miranda 0 #7 December 30, 2009 I had tried to manually remove it using those instructions and also tried the malware but neither worked. I ended up using RegCure but only after I finally got the task manager working again. There is definitely help out there for those of us who need it. My problem was that for the past 4 days I had been trying to figure out what was going on but never even realized it was actually a virus. I did install the AVG as soon as I sucessfully removed the virus so hopefully the problem is remedied.
tigra 0 #8 December 30, 2009 I read that one of the problems with this virus is that if you fall for it and follow their instructions, you will end up removing programs and files that the computer actually needs. Its a new computer, right? Didn't it come with some kind of "restore" disk?
Miranda 0 #9 December 30, 2009 Thankfully I didn't remove anything. I read that other people had problems with it "coming back" but I think the RegCure got it so hopefully we won't have that problem. So far everything seems good.

Such as me, and I've always used windows. I'm what you'd call a computer nerd, and I've never used any antivirus, and I've never had a virus infection. For the less nerdy, I suggest using antivirus software, such as AVG. But whatever you do, DO NOT use any Norton antivirus product. They are far worse than 98% of viruses out there. Trust me.
