Just returned from the smaller carribean islands like Union, the Grendaines, Bequia etc... and saw alot of smaller sail boats moored at these idyllic locations. Asked around a bit and was told you could charter one if you had a bareboat license. You had one...did you use it?...Was is expensive to get? KTWilliams 0 #6 December 22, 2009 I have a 100 ton master captains license with towing and sailing endorsement. Feel free to send me an email with any questions. The biggest concerns with most charter companies are experience. Let me know some details and I am more than happy to advise. Amazon 7 #9 December 22, 2009 Bascially they are looking for experience. Owning your own boat goes a long way toward learning the fine points, boat handling.. learning to read the wind... and all the things needed for safety. By doing that you learn to talk the talk.. and to walk the walk. Take a few classes to get started and voila get out on the water and have some fun. http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/boa/1508165589.html You can get into a nice little tralerable boat like a Catalina 22' with a swing keel for not a whole lot of money. Learn how to handle it out on the lakes.... then take it north to the BIG LAKE there and learn to handle it there. Find people with sailing skills who want to go sailing. And PLEASE .... no one give me shit about the choice of boat.. they are cheap.. easy to sail... and a good place to start.. and not as easy as some other small boats to broach... and go for a swim
airdvr 210 #10 December 22, 2009 That would be a good place to start. I know zip about sailing. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Got it in Sandy Eggo way back when... Wife & I did the same as you're talking about as far as hitting the Islands and renting. I don't know how it is these days but several years back you not only needed a license but several of the rental agencies want to take you out for a 'brief' $how of $kills. 1st time I tried to rent was in the USVI...didn't go well. I was fairly competent for a non boat owner and had gone out 'solo' several times in S.D. in prep for the trip, however they didn't consider my skills up to their requirements. ...actually it's a hard press to get ya to hire on a 'capt.' or at lea$t pay a day refresher. ~I refused and suddenly my 'skills' were okay enough, but since I'd lost one of 3 days already screwing around with them, I declined. A few months later we tried again with better success, this time I also went out several times at home but lied to the rental place and said I owned and was quite proficient thank you...I would be willing to do a walk through but wouldn't waste time playing around. Went like 'butter'! It's a lot harder in Pacific seas that time of year, so the VI was no challenge. Rented several times following that and had no problems, mainly because every-time I could reference the prior rental companies...no damages no delays etc. Got my ticket in part through the Navy which put me 1/2 way there, and paid for the rest through a private company @ Shelter Island in San Diego...IIRC it was under 1K...but like I said I had the books and some experience already. Still 'have' it, but like my SCUBA card (Rescue, Wreck, Cave,) I haven't used either in a long enough period of time I would want to go through a lot of it again before 'jumping solo' so to speak. Worth it if you're going to use it, JUST like a skydiving license... But something you also want to stay current with. Hope that helps a little... ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
