HELP!!! Great songs about dads!

Recommended Posts

My sister is completing an AWESOME DVD of all of my family's pictures and videos from growing up. We have PERFECT songs to go along with everything except for the section on my dad.

Seems like most good "dad" songs out there are about dads that left, or weren't there, etc. How about some songs about a dad that rocked the house, and made his kids who they are today?

Any suggestions are helpful.

This one always brings a tear to my eyes for some reason: Alan Jackson - Drive

Depends on the exact situation but this song is great. My brother played it for my Dad on Christmas...it brought my Dad to tears. The big thing about it though is that my Dad is technically his step-dad. But my brother has always considered him more of his Dad than his actual Dad. So it may still be appropriate but maybe not quite so much as it was for the relationship between my brother and my Dad.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. A few here that I hadn't found with google searches. For the moment we've settled on Song for Dad by Keith Urban, but we're still trying to come up with a name or some lyrics for a couple songs he used to always sing us. The problem is we know he used to make up lyrics all the time because he would forget the real ones. We know the tunes, just not the actual names or lyrics!

Thanks again!

That's about a "neglectful" dad.[:/] The opposite would be Cat Stevens - Father and Son. The father tries to bestow a little wisdom and the son is too stupid to even listen. (I was on the son's side when I first heard this song.):)

No, not really. It explores both sides of a fairly typical parent-child relationship as it evolves over a lifetime, and illustrates how ordinary busy lives can often use up so much time and space in any family's relationship. The lesson is, take the time to make the time for all of your family members, while you still can, because all opportunities are finite. Anyone who's ever lost, for example, a close relative has probably experienced this.

Probably better word than "neglectful" would have been "detached". The song is about a father lamenting his lack of involvement in his son's early life which has resulted in the son's similar treatment of the father later in their lives. The behavior of the son was learned from the father. "The Cat's in the Cradle" phrase refers to the son's upbringing by someone other than his parent........not that the parent is "missing", but preoccupied by work, friends, and his own interests. It usually means the child-rearing duties were taken over by a substitute or nanny who was more involved in the child's daily existence and emotional needs.

Edit to add: You are right, though......unfortunately it is "fairly typical", even if the "substitute is the mother.
