aresye 0 #1 December 14, 2009 -10F all last week. Luckily our helos were down, because we had a bunch of night flights scheduled. Being a crewman in the back, flying around at night with the door and window open for mountain flying easily puts the cabin at -30F. Then we got dumped on by snow. Just went out to Squaw Valley this weekend. Got dumped on by so much snow, I buried myself snowboarding close to 5 times today. Went to a casino tonight. Played Craps (best casino game ever), and won a grand total of: . . . . . $1 Gotta love Nevada!Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours. SARLDO 0 #3 December 14, 2009 Ahhh, Fallon... Nice place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit there. Watch out for those power lines buddy, every once in a while they reach out and snatch a bird. And pay attention to the wind in the mountains. Down flowing air and rising terrain don't mix - be safe. (AMC AW/NAC... OMD LCPO 95-99)"Always do right. aresye 0 #6 December 15, 2009 We fly the SH-60F and the HH-60H Seahawks. It's been so cold, they've been down until today due to mechanical issues. SARLDO, thanks for the words of wisdom. Fallon is quite perilous to low-flying helos, especially under the low-light conditions we've been having. Luckily though the colder weather is giving us more power. Last time we came out here was late July, early August. Some days were so hot our helos couldn't even hover.Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours. aresye 0 #8 December 15, 2009 Our maintenance department isn't the best, but they get the job done. Hard to bring a bird up when the intermediate gearbox oil is frozen to a sludge, or the engine ends up ingesting a bunch of snow chunks, dirt, and sand. I worked TAD with maintenance for 3 months while getting my plane captain designation. When a bird is down, and we need the flights, it's not uncommon for most of them to put in 18-20hr workdays. The SH-60F and HH-60H are both old platforms, which is one of the reasons all HS squadrons are converting to the MH-60S. Like the Navy's F-14, the amount of maintenance hours per flight hour are starting to get extensive.Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
