I went to my mailbox, lo and behold what do I find but my hospital bill from my accident a few weeks ago ( you can read about it in the incidents forum under Injury hard opening West point 11/15/09). Anyways it is a whopper of a bill. Here is a little list of charges for your entertainment pleasure. I did not include all the little incidental stuff.

Tray Suture plastic surgery $125.00
Collar Aspen regular $109.00
XRAY Chest single view $275.00
Lactate Blood $135.00
Basic metabolic (stat) $385.00
Alcohol (stat) $129.00
CT Cervical Spine wo/contrast $1,959.00
CT Head/Brain wo/contrast $1,959.00
Radiologic Exam Knee 3 views $343.00
Antibody screening $100.00
IV Infusion Hydration 31-60 min $332.00
Room & Board less than 24 hrs $1,274.00
Full trauma Team $3,433.00
ED Facility Visit level 5 $2,057.00
TOTAL BILL: $13,276.55
AMOUNT DUE FROM PATIENT: A big fat ZERO

Gotta love good health insurance. this bill does not include the Helicopter to the hospital. I may change my opinion once I get that bill but we will wait and see. I just thought it was interesting how expense this shit is even for a short stay.

Expect probably another $20K for the chopper ride.

depending on what they did in the bird and how long the flight was it might be that expensive in itself :D

Damn! I was guessing around 10K. They didn't do anything on the chopper but wipe the blood away from going in my eyes. The chopper ride itself was about 20-25 minutes at most as best as I can recall

20k is high, he would have had to be SERIOUSLY fucked up for it to be that high, it will probably be around 8-10k, from what i rember. but prices cary, so you could very well be right

Makes me wish the hospital I was at would have given me an itemized bill. I would have liked to have seen how the $50K broke down.

Well, OR time and anesthesia time are billed by the 15 minutes. then if you got hardware. Surgeon's time plus paying all the OR staff....
Recovery room time and staff/meds.

Shit adds up FAST.

Spend a month in the ICU and you will find out.

Hope I never have to.

But that was my point .. what is YOUR life worth? To me, $50K seems cheap.

I think that was just for a ankle/leg.:P

Well ... I guess bellying up to the bar is worth at LEAST that! ;)

Indeed. $50k was just a tib/fib. That also didn't include the surgeon or anesthesiologist.

My lifeflight was 13 minutes one way. 12,692.00.
Hospital bills for pelvis, sacrum, coccyx, ACL/MCL, bladder and colon damage (plus other sundries) came to just shy of 200,000.00.
Add therapy and a few other post-accident issues, just over 225,000.00.

would be hard to enjoy with a 36 degree curve and degenerative disks. :o no worries though, this is why we have insurance, so the medical bills dont come and take our houses and nest egg.

I walked into the emergency room 53 weeks ago & said, "My chest hurts." Three days later I walked out, with a stent. A few months later I finally received the itemized bill for just shy of $102,000. Co-pay = $500.
